Our ninth release is a special one that’s close to our hearts — announcing the ‘So AM’ EP by Gallery B. Currently living and working on Larrakia land (Darwin), Emma Stevenson (aka Gallery B / @gallerybmaking) is a producer and DJ with a deep appreciation of music. As one of the founding members of TSBU, Emma has played a significant part in the label’s inception, and fortuitously returns to the label full-circle to release the ‘So AM’ EP.

Taking cues from 90s production and the tranquil surrounds of Emma’s home in the Northern Territory, these tracks represent a new direction for Gallery B; a step away from previous ambient excursions into tropical-tinged downtempo. So AM may be a new direction, yet one which feels at home alongside previous Gallery B works — maintaining the delicate layers and dreamlike textures synonymous with her sound.

A gorgeous unearthing from two top end friends rooted in collaboration and experimentation comes Pod; Peace of Dream. The duo present the shimmering single “Past” for a special digital Step Ball Chain release; two alternative versions for your pleasure, both downtempo dreamscapes recorded on Larrakia Country. Prominent underground Australian artists in their own right, Hamish Rahn and Emma Stevenson delve into exquisite pop with emotive and raw beauty, a lucid state of mind. A bonus blissed out drum and bass rendition of Past rounds out the release from none other than SBC alumni Maara.

On and on the loop remains,

Peace Of Dream - Past (DIGISTEP2)

‘For home use only’ is an anti-club social, a chance to get to know someone/something. A series of transmissions purely dedicated to exploring the other side.

Joining us for our third installment is the queen of Queensland, Miss Emma Stevenson aka DJ XXXX (fourex) aka the lady of the deep aka the iceberg that sunk the titanic. Hailing from the sunshine state where there's no such thing as rain or daylight savings, she’s used the lack of infringement on time to her advantage, honing her skills to become an absolute solid force in the idiosyncratic world of the ‘disk jock’. 

In the last few years, Brisbane has popped its head up in the scene with a number great producer’s, record labels, DJ’s and parties, firmly stamping their own imprint on the Australian landscape. Emma has been a huge part of this movement, sticking it out, avoiding the temptation to move to Melbourne or Sydney and just holding down the fort in Brisbo. Her digging habits compare to that of nervous badger, constructing complex, long-lasting networks of tunnels and chambers that make up her deeply rooted DJ sets.  

The mix itself is almost perfect for a post-club debrief, almost like a bed time story with a twist at the end. Layers upon layers of lush soundscapes laden with memory triggers and spatial echoes. I recommend being selfish on this one and putting in your headphones. 

Personally, I’m a massive fan of Emma on both sides of the decks so it's an absolute pleasure to present this mix and I can’t wait to see how far she will go.

My approach to playing a gallery space kinda mimics my own living room soundtracking, picking up spacious stuff suited for bubbling under dinner guest banter, or just enjoying some solo unwind time.”

Graduating students of RMIT’s Master of Fashion (Design), Nicole Anderson and Samantha Clark, present “Material Fetishes”, a multimodal fashion exhibition that utilises performance to explore sensory relationships with clothing.

Fashion is a confounding term, depending on how one wants to engage in conversation with fashion is driven by the scale of the encounter. Here we see cultural narratives of the feminine body as it is constructed through art, film, literature and popular culture. At a close range fashion is sensual and erotic, the garment is all but textile, body heat, sweat and perfume. The electric vibration of velvet as the hand passes over it. Or the insubstantial sexually provocative nature that is attributed to latex, suggestive of a guilty secret.

Samantha Clark presents ‘Performing Fetishism’, a project that examines the idea that fetishism has morphed into a form of style that women may slip on and take off as easily as a costume on the basis of “the surface qualities of the spectacle”. Nicole Anderson explores ‘The Sublime Space’, an investigation into how digital and tactile surface design can connect with the unconscious to communicate and provoke complex emotions. Together they offer a series of performances and garments that use print and craft-based techniques to engage with narratives that many may find difficult to convey in words. As objects, these cultural curiosities may hold or hint at aspects of our own fantasies and identities, but the expression of a sensation is something that can be rarely empathised with by another.

Passing Notes welcomes its second virtual guest, Gallery B. Gallery B aka Emma Stevenson is the kind of artist that can craft a set for every possible occasion - something that I’ve been admiring through delving into her vast back catalogue of inspiring mixes.  Such versatility only comes to the deepest of diggers, those that consider music and sound in all its forms. Emma’s deep appreciation for music and sound has also found her stepping away from the booth and into the studio, recently launching her moniker Gallery B, which encompasses her exquisite contemporary ambient project. 

Her debut tape release “Omni Era” on Divisions is simply mesmerising. Stunning layers of texture created through hardware, sampling and field recordings. Trance-like ambience for contemplation, reflection, dreaming. Anyone to hear this could mistake this for years experience - I eagerly await her ‘Dream Machine’ performance at Inner Varnika 2021 as well as what’s to come for Gallery B. 

Here, Gallery B presents an off the cuff mix of UK downtempo and ambient techno, the perfect beginning to any Passing Notes episode.
