....I don’t know if that changes history or not…maybe it’s the power of familiarity that has “Watch Your Step” standing out to me on An Instrumental Odyssey, or maybe it’s just as simple as the fact that it has always been an excellent song.  Listening to it now, months later on down the road…I dunno…I’d have been crazy to not have cited this as one of Galliano’s most memorable cuts when I reviewed it earlier on, so here’s to hoping I did my job as a listener correctly and labeled it as such back in April.  You’ll have to read it over yourselves to know for sure – but suffice it to say, “Watch Your Step” is a genuinely remarkable song, a brilliant inclusion into this particular lineup, and quite likely a major highlight in his catalog not only now, but for years after; it has the strength & hooks to hold up.....Sleeping bag Studios Sept 2021

While it’s true that any musician’s career will reveal peaks & valleys over time, the vast majority of what we’ve heard from Galliano Sommavilla over these past three years has always sounded inspired to me.  Certainly included in that assessment, the opening track of his new album Light And Shade called “The Colours Of Caravaggio” was a gorgeous start to his latest audible odyssey.  You can take that opinion to the bank and cash it folks, because it’s not just my own – the moment I started playing “The Colours Of Caravaggio” last week when I got this new record from Sommavilla, my wife shouted from her office beside me over-top of the music to say “that’s really pretty” and inquire who it was.......

.............Actually, Sommavilla never uses a traditional verse/chorus/verse/chorus song structure on any of the tunes on this album.  But that is not to say that material is not melodic.........  consistently melodic, and Sommavilla makes it clear that he is one of the more musical performers in the diverse electronica field.  There is nuance galore on these performances, which have a lot of character......

This Is Your Captain Speaking (REDUX)

.........At first, the song sounded so much like a soundtrack for a scene in a dark, cold forest, with creatures roaming the night, that for a while, I couldn’t figure out why it was called “Air and Water”. Then I got it. The steady movements of the beginning may have been meant to serve as a backdrop, the backdrop of natural elements behaving as we love them to – safe and beautiful, with subtle surprises – breezes, soft, lapping waves. When the song shifts gears, it represents the elements at their wildest, their most powerful: hurricanes, rip tides, big winter waves with all their thrill and chill...

...Dragon Stanic’s guitar work plays a huge role in the evolution of this power- house sound, while also serving as a constant element, always resurfacing, like the tide. His musicianship is stunning – it sounds almost improvised, in a good way. Either it is improvised, and Stanic is a brilliant improviser, or it’s scripted and the Stanic is equally brilliant for making it sound so like an element, natural, stream of consciousness.
Essentially, this tune, in all its darkness and power, mirrors the connection between the elements -- wind whipping up the waves, waves crashing into the wind, everything turning and meshing into everything else, picking up pace and volume, carrying us all along, no matter what is going on in our individual lives. There is always something bigger at work in the universe, and Sommavilla has captured it here....

....I’m almost caught off guard, and the intense presence of each one makes me desperate to pay attention to EVERYTHING at once.......
It’s a bit overwhelming, but at the same time feels like a world unto itself, a step into Sommavilla’s own version of Oz, where everything is unfamiliar, new, and entrancing. At first, one might want to retreat, but eventually can’t help but follow the curiosity into this beautiful swirl of sound and movement.........
