Galun is an innovative electronic music producer, performer, and beat boxer that I’ve had the honor of working with for almost a decade. Stoked he took the time to remix Regen. Our collab EP “STRANNIK” (2015) is still one of my favorite records I’ve ever been a part of. Grateful for all he’s inspired and shown me over the years. One Instrument is proud to release Galun's album, composed by Russian artist Sergei Galunenko, who currently resides in Estonia. Titled "Golos" (meaning "voice" in English), the album reflects Galun's belief that the voice is the most crucial musical instrument, with each individual possessing a unique one.

Galun's project relies solely on his voice to create all sounds, using beatboxing and special vocal skills, with some effects added to create electronic sounds. The resulting music spans genres such as beats, techno, bass music, ambient, and experimental performance.

For an extended period, Sergei has been composing music using only his voice, seeking to replicate electronic music with his vocals.
Since childhood, he has been fascinated with electronic sounds and the unique sounds created by synthesizers.

The album showcases Galun's exploration of ambient music, beyond the traditional beatbox genre. The track "Mir" (meaning "peace") is particularly meaningful to the artist, evoking a desire for peace amidst ongoing global crises, wars, and disasters. Galun wishes for a fair and harmonious world with nature and society, where all chaos is sent into a black hole.

After several releases with bands, composing for television, and collaborating with other artists, Galun has now gifted us with a beautiful, emotional, and deeply personal album.

Following hype for recent releases from Osaka's Kiji Suedo (Hosek EP & Riot album) and Edinburgh's George T (Roll On, King's Cross single), Edinburgh's Hobbes Music label burrows deeper into ambient/drone/experimental electronic terrain with brand new signing Galun, originally from Moscow but currently based in Tallinn.  

With a career & discography over 15 years deep, Galun's new album - Glagol - will be released at the end of summer, with a run of five singles emerging via streaming platforms only over the coming weeks, beginning with first single 1981 (out next Friday 23rd June).  

Galun is the solo project of Moscow musician, artist, and producer Sergei Galunenko (currently based in Tallinn).  Galunenko has performed at numerous prestigious Russian events and collaborated on projects internationally in a career spanning more than 15 years, with a discography to match, turning his attention to myriad styles: IDM, funk, techno, juke, post rock, beatboxing, free improvisation, drone.   

“In my project, Galun, I do not use musical instruments,” he explains. “All the sounds are produced with only the use of my voice through beatbox and special vocal skills.  Some effects are used to produce electronic sounds.”

1981 is the first single from Galunenko’s eighth studio album, Glagol (or Glagolь / Глаголь in Russian), a collection recorded between 2013 and 2022.  The title is an old Russian word which translates as ‘Speak’.

"This album consists of tracks written in different periods, so it turned out to be diverse," he says.  "There are classic ambient tracks, as well as experimental ones in search of new possibilities for voice processing."

“1981 was one of the first tracks written after the Solitude album (2014). The idea was to make a rhythmic ambient track, like techno without drums.”

Why "glagol"?

“Since the music on this album is 90 percent processed voice, it's a form of conversation for me," he reveals, “where I talk about my thoughts and mood, so speak music, while using my voice, is an amazing way of expressing.”

1981 will be out on STREAMING PLATFORMS ONLY from 23.6.23, followed by a further four singles over summer, with the full album released 25.8.23.

“This composition was conceived as a classic ambient (one). I sang a few notes, composed chords from them, then transposed some of the notes up and down an octave, plus processing, and thus created what I intended."

Choral will be out on STREAMING PLATFORMS ONLY from 30.6.23.  A further three singles will be released over summer.  (First single 1981 is released on Friday 23rd June)

The full album will be released on limited edition cassette, lathe cuts and digital platforms, 25.8.23.

“Came about by chance. I recorded a house track using my old recordings, and a good sample was chosen that combined harmony and bass. I placed this piece in the middle of the house composition, before the climax, and then began to play with the slowdown of the whole track with granular processing. It turned out that this sample sounded like a separate composition.”

“I invited Alek Fin to record our second joint material. Usually I send my sketches, and he chooses what he likes and continues to refine them. So a little material was recorded, but we could not release it, and decided to disassemble it by compositions into our albums.”

“This is the first composition that breaks my concept of this project (no synths). Here I use voice samples with virtual synths, and processing as always. The idea was to make a classic ambient track from VST instruments.”
