Haru is the word for "Spring" and marks the beginning of the year for me. Spring is when the world recovers from winter and tries to find its footing again. Spring may produce pop-up rain showers and even short thunderstorms, but it also instigates growth and healing. And Spring brings out the elegance and beauty of the world, specifically with Cherry Blossoms, of which inspired this album's cover art.

I wrote this song in winter. It was a cold evening when the power went out at home and I and two of my relatives decided to go to another very small property we own in the town nearby. While we had electricity there, the small house lacked internet and there weren't enough beds for everyone. At that point, I felt the intense longing for Spring to come and bring back the power at home. This song was somewhat of a passionate prayer, even though I love the winter.

Level Up!

In the process of creating this Gynoid, whom I have named “Chroma Sirius”, I couldn’t decide whether I wanted her to feel excited or depressed. The idea of living amongst machines sounds fun and useful, but as we have seen with technology recently, the more human-like machines become, the less humanity is needed for anything creative. The image depicts Chroma sitting motionless before all of her components levitate away from her body and face; this is meant to depict advanced electro-magnetic technology that feels and looks like magic; magnets in the real world violently snap together, while these metallic pieces calmly glide through the air, as if floating weightlessly. After the pieces return to the body, Chroma is charged with electricity, which eventually brings her to life, and she begins to imagine independently. The metal again begins to float, indicating she has received full charge until she powers down and the metals return to their original positions. The cycle continues. The main question that arose from her creation was “should this feel utopian or dystopian?” In the end, I decided to give her an ambiguously surprised face, one that could be imagined as breathing, but not much else. Ultimately, this is a question that should extend to the audience: Should technology ever reach this level, or should Chroma and her kind remain in science fiction? Alternatively, is there a way Chroma and her kind can coexist with humanity?

“Gynoid” is the term for a humanoid robot that is gendered feminine. Coined by one of the “Big Three” science fiction writers and professor, Isaac Asimov in 1979, the term actually encompasses a wide range of machines, from the typical crude, boxy robot to more sophisticated androids. Gynoids also encompass a wide range in posture and presentation. This particular art piece was directly inspired by several depictions of gynoids from the artist Hajime Sorayama, who curated his art into an artbook titled The Gynoids. I also took a lot of inspiration from anime depictions of gynoids and robots, especially the likenesses of Daft Punk in the animated movie Interstella 5555. I wanted to capture the special kind of reflectivity that chrome gives, while also keeping a relatively consistent cell shading, the shading style typically used in anime and manga.

I decided that Future Bass would be the best musical genre to be paired with art similar to what I referenced. Future Bass is a genre born from melodic trap and hip-hop music of the late 2000s and dubstep from the early 2010’s, and features uptempo action, bright and wobbly synthesized chord progressions, and stop-time rhythms filled with percussion and textured sound effects. The interesting thing about Future Bass is that the genre appeals to a wide range of possible futures, from dystopian cyberpunk to utopian euphoria. The particular style I went with resonated with a near-utopian, busy, bustling world where technology and humanity coexist comfortably, and the sound design should feel chrome and metallic. The visual art I referenced made me think of the musician, Grant (Bowtie), who I took heavy inspiration from in making this piece. It was important for me to pick a style that felt like the perfect combination of something mechanical, but also very alive. I implemented percussive elements like buttons clicking and switches flicking. Though this is futuristic, I explicitly wanted some parts to feel mechanical and analogue: retro-futuristic. I also incorporated glitchy sound effects and radio chatter foley, elements that feel vintage, but are incorporated in a new way. Though I want this to feel futuristic, I did not want things to sound so distant that they were completely alien and non-human. This is a machine constructed and conceived by the human mind, not some far off civilization from somewhere where humans don’t exist.

Gynoids

Society has become increasingly infatuated with mobile devices. We have given ourselves incredible conveniences with the power of supercomputers in our pockets. Realistically, it would not be a stretch to assert that mobile smartphones are arguably the most useful items constructed in recent human history. However, when we recharge our phones, we give ourselves more access to attention-grabbing and potentially time-wasting software. This is a paradox; we willingly recharge one item to fill otherwise possibly useful space in a life that cannot be recharged. On the other end, does recharging make the world healthier? I wanted to convey the feeling of owning a phone from a pessimistic viewpoint. When the phone is off, we are anxious to return to it. When the phone is on, we are trapped, completely isolated with whatever else is going on with the phone, but blinded to anything else.

There are a plethora of questions that can be raised about our relationships with our phones, all questions that should be considered. And it is completely okay to believe that the pros of phones outweigh the cons, or vice versa. But these questions should be considered. Are we recharging our phones or are we recharging our access to the growing dystopia of the internet? Are we simultaneously recharging our communications with our friends and family? Were humans meant to witness so many recharges of emotion and blind responses, or were we meant to experience life linearly: one birth, one death? Does recharging make our experiences less valuable? Maybe it is better to experience a reset when life comes close to end, and perhaps the literal waste that recharging leaves behind is minimal (especially considering many batteries are disposed of). Perhaps the future will bring about lives that can be renewed with a simple recharge. Do we exist for life, or for software?

Future Riddim is a relatively new genre in the dubstep family. Riddim emphasizes very bold and obvious rhythmic drums and growly bass sounds, often characterized by slow quarter note and triplet bass patterns. Future riddim took a lot of the sound design and drum pattern inspiration from riddim, but added the forward-thinking synthesizers and ear candy typically found in future bass. This allowed future riddim to sound more euphoric and heavenly, while still maintaining that heavy mechanical feeling. An artist who specializes in future riddim and inspired this track goes by Nuushi [stylized NUU$HI], and a lot of his music tends to incorporate a healthy mix of semi-orchestral and euphoric synth pads with the heavy mechanical feeling of riddim.

My submission ended up placing second place, which was not quite enough to land my song in a permanent place in the Yars Rising soundtrack, but an admirable placement nonetheless. This track is supposed to represent that feeling of genuine comfort in the space or with the people who best understand you, a place or situation where you never want to leave. For me, that happens to be by myself, in my room, working on music or playing video games. It's always going to feel like home and like pure comfort to me. That freedom to just be myself and express my emotions without judgement feels euphoric to me, but maybe it's different for you.

This track is the feeling of a midnight party or festival that has just began. Summer is upon us, and thus this is the big opening for the summer festivities, the opening festival on the midnight of the summer solstice, complete with cheering and fireworks. The night brings forth the sky's beauty as everyone prepares for the best time of the year.

This is that feeling of festivity. For Americans, we think of the fourth of July, with the explosiveness of fireworks and familiar smells of barbecue. For others, it may be the Calgary Stampede parades, Gion Matsuri with their iconic floats and food, or even Tomorrowland's biggest new electronic hits echoing across the world. Either way, stand up, go outside, experience the feeling of a nice summer walk before it gets too hot.

Also, shoutout to MAZO. This was their last collaboration with me before they stopped working on music indefinitely. They asked for no musical credits or title features, but I still wanted to shout them out.

I quite like bouncy Future Bass, and I would say some of my more unique songs include some form of bounce. I think this sums up my style well and unapologetically.

My Style

Often I find myself in a place in my mind far removed from reality. Sometimes it's beautiful, sometimes it's void, sometimes it's filled with music, and sometimes it's pure diegetic sound. Sometimes, it's strange, sometimes it's welcoming. But really, I have no clue what it is.

Headspace (IDK where I am)

Sometimes I find myself stuck in a world of my own imagination. It's similar to my headspace, but instead, things happen around me in the real world, like a child watching their imaginary characters in the real world pass them in the backseat of the car. It's a very interesting space where the flow of time is constantly altered. Sometimes these characters or overlayed images in my mind help keep me grounded in the current time, so I soak in everything there. And sometimes they help me pass the time by keeping me distracted. This song is about that grappling with time. Living in a world where time sometimes feels inconsistent.

Time

Oddwin is hosting a remix contest, so I thought I would throw my hat in the ring. I missed the last couple remix contests, so this time I tried extra hard to make up for that. I did some work with the vocals and such, messed around with vocoder and such, and that’s how I landed on that drop vox.

With every album I release, at least one song is a heavy study of a particular artist I like to listen to. It's a necessary part of growing as an artist, finding people and styles you like. For this album, I've referenced MYRNE, Geoxor, Airuei/Succducc, Duumu, Ooyy, and, most recently with this very release, which I think is the most blatant, Jey Vazz. And I want to make it clear that I don't hide who influences me and who I study. I aim to be relatively transparent in this ever-so deceptive world of illusions and technology.
