There are times in which you can clearly mark a producer’s evolution. When they stop inching towards growth and make a bold statement of change in capability and vision. Such is the case with this EP from Detroit-based disco guru, Pontchartrain. After a few years of steadily pushing out some significant pieces of work that have increasingly straddled the line between originals and edits, and nearly a decade of studio experience, his long overdue official house music debutante has arrived. Featuring detroit local soul artist, Coko Buttafli laying down some blistering vocals with a clearly positive house music message, on top of live percussion and keys, and bold analog drum rhythms, pontch has created a solid diva-house gem. The sneaky festival-ready banger, “Loose”, performed, mixed, and overdubbed live, provides some fantastic contrast and versatility to the release. A Mr. G-esque remix by DJ phenom Just Alexander and
the musical journey of Topher Horn’s evolving and deep version on the flipside make this a well rounded record that will undoubtedly stay in your bag for a while, and will find it’s way back in for years to come.

Since its inception in 2013, Mawimbi founders have been expanding their knowledge of lesser known and rather undiscovered musical territories thanks to chance encounters with likeminded DJs/producers, who were kind enough to put them onto a good amount of under-the-radar tropical gems.

Launched in 2017 and named after Mawimbi's bi-monthly radio show on Rinse France, the "Radio Mawimbi" compilation series is dedicated to unearthing vintage tropical gems in the form of free download edits and remixes by some of the most seasoned diggers and promising rookies of the tropical-enthusiast community!

From deep, drum-heavy workouts to essential Guinea Bissau melancholy, through remixed Beninese afrofunk and vintage South African kwaito, this second installment features the editing and remixing works of Yeahman (Frente Bolivarista), LSD (Love Saves The Day), Déni Shain (Antagana Records), Umoja, Mawimbi, ATW (Around The World), Calisto, Turbo Boom-Boom (TBB) and Midnight Ravers.

The latest transmission from the Lumberjacks stable taps up London-based producer Alan Dixon, who tackles a soul-stirring gospel belter from Frank Booker on the A side. Whatever your spiritual persuasion, "Rise & Shine" can't help but inject a little joy into your life. On the flip, Dixon turns the piano house power up to 11 with the life-affirming thrust of "Whatcha Gonna Do", featuring Maleke O'Ney on vocal duties. Completing the set, Lumberjacks head honcho Marcel Vogel drops in a remix that twists the original into a loose and limber jazz-funk-house odyssey of epic proportions.

“I’ve chosen to record a mix to reflect the iconic South African Gumba/Synth Pop sound of the 80s and 90s. The term derives from ‘gumba gumba’ and later became ‘gumba fire’, referring to the boom of speakers during parties in South African townships. Not only do I adore of this style of music but I think it’s important to step out of what you know and to research, celebrate and appreciate music from across the globe.

In essence it’s a window into different cultures and times, and more often than not it’s a great way to grow and expand your taste, while gaining insight into new and interesting scenes that deserve more recognition. The fact South Africa was able to produce such great music during a time as suppressive and horrible as apartheid is a real credit to their people.

The first Gumba track I heard was ‘stages’ by Don Laka, which has gained much deserved recognition after its success featuring on Hunee’s “Hunchin’ All Night’ put out by Rush Hour. It was actually a friend of mine (Diogo/Caldo Verde) who is a selector in Portugal who first showed me the track and the ‘Gumba Fire’ compilation album while I was working there a couple years back. 

The contribution of black artists to the music industry is so significant I can’t even begin to try to explain it. This is a drop in the ocean, but I think the (mostly) black south African artists that built this genre deserve more recognition, especially in the UK, maybe this can help…”

Record loving selector DJ based in London (and formerly Edinburgh). I love sticking my head in crates and learning more about the amazing music that can be found across the world. 

I'm a bit of retro zouk specialist (checkout my zouk show on My Analog Journal for more) but also have a great interest in soca, highlife, makossa, PALOP music, bubblegum, kwaito, latin freestyle and beyond - I enjoy celebrating globally sourced groovy records to fill dancefloors, and deliver an experience that makes club goers smile while they move

My mission is to spread this wonderful music and the talented artists that contributed to its creation with as many as people as possible! 

I run a clubnight and reissue / edits label along with a few friends called “Discothèque Tropicale”. Music to bring the boogie, fill the floors and put smiles on faces! 

I do the programming for London based radio station LOOSE FM where I also run the radio shows ‘The Listening Bar’ & 'Musical Backpacking' focussing each show and the record digging on a specific genre, theme or area.
