That gold-ringed nose has cost him

Why can't I?

Inspired by Wicken Fen, a preserved stretch of England before it was England, haunted by the ghosts of Celts and Saxons. The verse form and viewpoint is Anglo-Saxon, a young boy on night watch as his fire goes out.

The fire’s flames flee   from dark’s dagger drawn,
trees’ twigs tremble   my blood runs cold,
death-dread from deeps   from hills, from hollows,
through night-silence numbs   my axe-aching arms…
Now darky-feet drumming   sheep-feet, horse-feet,
wolf-howl, bear-roar,   rain-start and rain-stop;
today’s crop of slaves   stir by my lord’s boat,
the half-clearing crowds   with ghosts from bad dreams;
no light now but starlight   fierce as gods’ faces
to kindle my blood   or make sure my sight:
a witch of a watch   slumped in snake-fern
and no song of heroes   to cheer my chilled cheeks.
When I boast man’s beard   I’ll bear with my kin
the boat-gorging wave-road’s   spite-spitting storms
and go from this fell ground   back to the fatherland.
