Jane Fitz (@janefitz) is, by and large, one of my absolute favorite DJ's on this planet, and her invitation to do an (almost) all-night long B2B was something I absolutely could not pass up. I chose to meet her on her medium as well and carted over a couple cases of vinyl for us to play all wax for the entire set - something I've also not done in a long time and thoroughly miss.

This is a long-overdue homage to one of the best house labels ever conceived. At only ten releases long, and almost entirely created by both The Timewriter and Terry Lee Brown Jr., Driftwood hit the mark every single time with some of the smoothest deep house around. 

It took me quite a while to complete the series, not to mention a good amount of money, but the hunt was worth every penny. I've owned the entire series for about six years now, but just now am finally getting around to compiling a mix of only driftwood tracks. 

Total respect goes to the Driftwood label, Jean F. Cochois AKA The Timewriter, Norman Feller AKA Terry Lee Brown Jr., Hakan Lidbo, Robi Uppin, and Jonathan Axelsson. Special thanks goes to my friend Travis Wolf for originally pointing this label out to me back in 2002 and for kicking off an obsessed passion for this Imprint.

Afrolicious brings musical treats for you to feed your mind, body and soul which mixes a love of dj and dance culture along with a passion for organic soulful live music from around the world. With their first official release "A Dub for Mali" they have created a recipe that will satisfy diverse musical palettes, with elements of Afro-Beat and Disco brought together for 'Thursday Night Kinda Swing', Electro-Dub, reggae and down-tempo on the title track 'Foolin' and a funky mix of Malian blues, psychedelia and beats on 'A Dub for Mali' the ep is a reflection and a taste of the wide spectrum of sounds that have been cultivated weekly at the San Francisco based Afrolicious party, hosted by real life brothers Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz.Afrolicious' debut features some outstanding vocal performances from Burkina Faso's Yacouba Diara and Trinidad's Fresh is Life; locked in percussion and scatting vocals of Baba Duru,tight horn work of Billy Magic and Aaron Lebowitz and the wicked slide guitar, funky bass and arrangements of Joey "Pleasuremaker" McGuire.Produced by Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation the tracks were recorded in an improvisational atmosphere that helped capture the magic of the Afrolicious party environment, a place where magic might happen if you give it a chance.The vibe of the Afrolicious party and the years of working with outstanding musicians, vocalists and djs in clubs all over are captured on this release.



THURSDAY NIGHT KINDA SWING

@janefitz and I really do enjoy doing our B2B sessions. There's a scant amount of planning that goes in to these other than maybe an overarching idea of what we want to start and end with, and maybe a couple Discogs links for reference points mixed in. But that is literally it. We trust each other, and we're confident we can do it, and do it damn well. As always, she's on the audiences' right, I'm on the left, and we go one-for-one the entire time. No escape!!

This recording from October of 2019 at OHM in Berlin is her and I opening the party from zero and doing six hours of tension building hypnotics. Many thanks to the @patternsofperception crew for allowing us to do this, and for letting us use the Rane 2016 even though you've never touched one before.

Lee Burridge - DISTRIKT - Burning Man 2019

It’s been a while since I played DISTRIKT last. After this years experience I’m somewhat kicking myself. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crowd at Burning Man so wild and fun. The party was electric. Fire! And, it was only Tuesday. ‘Pacing it’ was obviously out of the question for the five thousand or so that joined me. The Robot Heart bus rolled up and plugged in. Hoj tore the place up before me. Our day party extended into night and most of us left with a smile on our faces and an electricity that carried us forward. Beautiful people swung above the crowd in a birdcage (is that safe I kept asking myself in my head)and hips wiggled and swung while the multi-level dance floor bumped and bounced. Basically, best day party at Burning Man ever ever. So, thank you DISTRIKT for giving me an extended set and an amazing party to play. Let’s do it again next year. It’s a date?
