In Italy for 16 months with no access to instruments or recording devices, so back to basics with sheet music and midi.

60 x 60-Second Film Scores: No.20-Pochi Passi

This is part of a project where a number of people were asked to provide an artwork (in its broadest sense) to fit an A4 box. I decided to use the term A4 literally and produce a musical composition around it.

A4 is the middle A note on a treble staff in music. For historical and other reasons, especially in Western music, only twelve notes of fixed frequencies are used. These fixed frequencies are mathematically related to each other, and are defined around the central note, A4. The current "standard pitch" or modern "concert pitch" for this note is 440 Hz.

An A4 sheet when folded once creates 2 smaller versions of itself (A5). Folded again this becomes 4, then 8, 16, 32, 64 before ending up at the ‘traditional’ maximum folds possible of 7, which equals 128 smaller sections.

This musical piece is set with the metronome mark set at 128 and is divided into 64 bars. It is in the key of A major. The piece opens with an A4 note and resolves to a final A major chord. Apart from the 2nd bar, where the flattened C temporarily pulls the piece into a minor key, all notes in the piece stay within the A major scale. To counteract the potential monotony that this could produce I have tried to break up the piece with rhythm rather than discord and resolution.

The first and third sections are in common time to reflect the standardization of both the middle A(4) note and the A4 sheet of paper. These sections then move into a 6:4 time signature, which alludes to the number 64

This piece is for 16 accordions set at different registers (i.e. using different reed settings). In the recording 4 accordions have been used but by utilizing the different registers this has given 16 different 'sounds', which are...1. Bassoon I, 2. Bassoon II, 3. Violin, 4. Cello, 5. Jazz bassoon, 6. Clarinet, 7. Master, 8. Tremolo, 9. Musette medium, 10. Musette wet, 11. Accordion, 12. Bandoneon, 13. Bass, 14. Organ, 15. Oboe, 16. Piccolo (approximate names as these are usually given symbols rather than names).
