Bombs Away

This song was a turning point for me.  After writing hundreds of songs but recording very few I pumped out Purple Crush and Listen over one weekend in 1997.  They were really more sketches of songs but the simpler concepts made it easier for me to not feel bogged down in the detail.  That was pivotal in my thinking and launched me into a period of greater creative productivity.    The lyrics for Purple Crush come from a poem that was inspired by the cover of a Thomas Merton Book. 

Purple Crush

Recorded at The Dutchman in 1997.  Though it's quite a simple guitar part, I always loved the chord and rhythm pattern for this song.  It's an unusual chord form with the root moving back and forth.   The semi disjointed lyrics and cadence of the vocal also hit a solid mark for me.

This was another song inspired by the Talking Heads and Brian Eno
Shane showed up at the studio with this beat written on his SoundMaster drum machine.  I jammed out a bass guitar to it and suddenly we had this cool thing.  Using an Eno concept, Shane went into the control room by himself and tracked whatever he wanted on 3 of the remaining 6 tracks of tape without my knowing what he would add. Then we traded places..Shane leaving me in the control room to track whatever I wanted onto the remaining 3 tracks.  I turned off his 3 tracks so I was only working off the bass and drum track.  Once I was finished we sat together with all the tracks playing to hear the mash up.  The result was Spontaneous Combustion.

Written for the multimedia release Eye.  I used sound clips from a Japanese sci-fi flick from the 60's called "The Liquid Creature".   

Castle

Recorded sometime in the mid 90's.  This is simply one of my fun explorations into found sound collages.  I remember nothing of how I built it or where I grabbed the dialogue from.  I frequently took things from television because of the random and rich amount of objects scattered everywhere for the taking.
