PREMIERE: Hot TuneiK feat. Oussy - Poema (Depth Institute Remix) [Zero Tolerance Recordings]

Back for a third sonic voyage into the world of deep and sensual progressive house, GMJ & Matter welcome 10 artists, both seasoned regulars and label newcomers, as they showcase “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 3”.

Opening the 2023 edition, Sri Lankan and US duo, Dimuth K & Forerunners create a smooth rolling groove from where “Exit Reality” flows in melodic rivulets, eerie synth lines and ambient effects. Hitting its stride post-breakdown, hypnotic patterns provide dancefloor vibrancy. Continuing the coruscating rhythmic vibe, EMPHI and Zankee Gulati deliver trademark poise – the Swedish star generating an immaculately cadenced synth line and textured pads on the club-friendly “Azur”, and the Australian producer bearing fruit with shimmering and free-flowing lead lines and bouncing bass groove on “HereAfter”.

The next quartet ably demonstrate a collection of artists at the peak of their powers, Armenia’s Ruben Karapetyan builds bass dominance and seething sultry dancefloor prowess in the early movements of “Erechtheum” before a mirrored synth line blossoms post-breakdown. Seasoned Greek producer, Simos Tagias, needs little introduction to the Meanwhile faithful and “Reality” is replete with 24-carat production pedigree as silky smooth and Vangelis-esque passages swim across a chunky backdrop. From the Balearic Islands to Belarus, late-night gems sparkle in the moonlight where Not Demure generates spine-tingling emotion with “Vis Pace” through his gradually evolving melodies that reach a stunning zenith at the breakdown. Rising and falling within a sturdy beat, sub bass and light percussive surround, the result is a progressive masterclass. The crunchy bass sequence and emotive chord sequences of “Upside Limit” are a deft reminder of Michael A’s production talent. Developing with ease, and stamped with a watermark of sonic identity, the Michael A sound is easily identifiable.

Making their Horizons debut Ezequiel Anile and Nicolas Petracca have been creating waves in the progressive house fraternity for more than 5 years as EANP. “Forget” is no exception with its delicately arpeggiated pattern and flowing stripped-back mid-section that is then juxtaposed alongside hefty beat in the latter stages. The uplifting chord progressions and ethereal atmosphere of “Just a Toy” finds Anton Brazhenov creating a dense and swirling aural collage with his Meeting Molly moniker, holding firm against a mesmerising grooved backdrop. The free-flowing sequences and organic-sounding synth work of Tommi Oskari rounds Vol. 3 off with the aptly titled “Morning on Mercury”. Delicately pitched, twinkling keys and superbly programmed bassline create an innovative sound which picks up the pace in the final stages after a captivating trip across outer the solar system.

10 new tracks of shimmering and ethereal beauty highlight a progressive voyage of discovery within “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 3”.

Rho Persei is a star in the northern constellation of Perseus. A key figure in Greek mythology, Perseus blazed a trail across the sky in his quest to defeat the Gorgons...a tale now reprised here, in Chapter 15.

Our latest story in sound casts Sezer Uysal in centre stage. Artists across the creative realm frequently lament the difficulty of putting thoughts onto paper. In electronic dance music, it’s the producers whose quest is to battle the hardships of making the creativity of mind materialize on a computer screen.

For Sezer Uysal, finding the right touch is more instinctual. His future written in the stars, he has been a regular on Suara, Hope and Manual Recordings. Opener My Last Growth Of Feathers is a spine-tingling track with enchanting vocals. It has moody synth smears and a real intoxicating feel that gets you in the groove. Permanent Route is a listening track that has the vocals well treated to sound like ghoulish spirits and majestic melodies that layer over the top. Last of all, Yaowin Caramel is super deep and spaced out, with more dream-like vocals and a flickering synth line that adds candle-lit style ambiance to the groove. 

These are brilliantly stylish and absorbing deep house cuts from one of the go-to producers on the scene right now!

We continue strong! This year's second release was a duty for one of our fav, and definitely one of the breaking through deep house artists for 2018., Greek producer, DSF! After his strong appearances on The Purr, Flora7Fauna, Zero10Records, he quickly gained respect from the biggest out there, such as Lee Burridge, Hernan Cattaneo, Erick Morillo and many others! His two track EP titled as "Ouranos / Pathos" is such a perfect combination of spring storytelling melodies and deep house groove. Argentinian duo Analog Jungs make their debut on Hope Recordings with a sensational four-track EP. Breaking into the scene in 2015, Claudio Cornejo and Gustavo Ruartebring with them a rich progressive legacy from a country synonymous with the melodic side of house music. Already signed to some solid imprints such as Balkan Connection, Clinique Recordings, Dopamine Music and Or Two Strangers, Analog Jungs are well on their way to stardom.

The EP begins with the swaggering‘Voltaire’. 80s sensibilities and crisp production set this track apart and signal what’s to come. ‘Smiles’ follows from a deeper, subtly tribal place. More thoughtful than its wilder brother, this is perfect warm up material for the cooler floors.

‘Mission Capsule’ is an energetic, percussive groover. Pads drift in and out with a will of their own as the main synth hooks you in for the full ride. Rounding out the pack, ‘Iceman’ continues at pace. Warm, inviting pads marry with a woodblock-led percussive cushion as the breaks cools the tension before providing the all-important pay off.

As its seventh and final iteration, “Seven Stories: Rebirth” closes the book on Chapter 24 Records’ telling comp series. From 2016’s “Overcoming the Monster” to last October’s “Tragedia,” it has woven poignant sonic narratives with each and every mix. On this most momentous of occasions, Cape Town’s Kostakis now makes his label debut. Thanks to the friendship of talented countryman Ryan Murgatroyd, he appears in the annals of Get Physical, Voltaire and Variety Music. Like recent releases on KATTERMUKKE, Poesie Musik and more, “Xerxes” sees Kostakis once again prevail in solo capacities. The original's crystal clear dynamics, vigorous bounce and thunderous bass make for a truly emphatic ending. And as they say, with every ending comes a new beginning!

Why do we tell stories?

We breathe, we eat, we sleep. We seek connection. These are our basic human needs.

But there is one more need we all share, and it centres on stories. All across the world, stories are being recounted everywhere, in every imaginable way, at any given time. For telling stories is at the very essence of what it is to be human.

The universe of stories can be broken down into seven basic plots which underlie all stories ever told. Recognising these patterns is the gateway to unravelling the universal symbolic language from which all storytelling is spun.

With ‘Rebirth', Chapter 24 returns with seven stories in sound collected from artists all across the world to bring these themes to life, the seventh and final iteration in this compilation series.

South African star Bruce Loko (Get Physical, Freerange) opens proceedings with the deep, melodious textures of Cyclone, whipping up the ethereal eye of the storm. Chapter 24 regular Kieran Apter is next, making good the tension with the impactful 6.10.21 Break. Such is the power of this track that it propels the listener into new sonic dimensions.

Kostakis (Get Physical, Katermukke) offers up Xerxes, which is equally big and conjures up the dusty, mysterious and impenetrable planes of the desert. Meanwhile, Acumen returns to the imprint in collaboration with Pontias. Shower for Hours is a pumping, techy number bound to get the dancefloor bouncing before opening out into a euphoric peak.

The compilation closes out with a high quality trio. Label favourite KatrinKa delivers the typically deep groove of ABAF. DJ Zombi (Beat Boutique) takes things further down into a dreamy and blissful space with Steph. The honour of closing out the final Seven Stories befalls Hope Recordings and Soundgarden legend Nick Warren and the talented Nicolas Rada, who revisit Anton Dhouran’s Valhalla Rising. Their Edition is fittingly deep, transportative and dramatic.

They say that there are only seven basic plots but a thousand different stories.

And so, as the storyteller utters that age old, magical phrase "Once upon a time...", let yourself be carried away one final time...
