The Periphery Defines The Centre

This composition is the result of my artistic residency at Uncool in Poschiavo (Switzerland 2021).
It is a radio portrait of Poschiavo town, its surrounding mountains and glaciers. During the residency I did outdoor self-made recordings of VLF natural radios phenomena, meteor echoes, electromagnetic field and radio communication. This portrait is a part of my ongoing  project started in 2014 about creating radio portraits around the world called “The unknown beyond” .

The European fire-bellied toad is, in fact, a frog. (No fire, either.) However, this is more than compensated by its satisfyingly fun-to-say Latin name: Bombina bombina. They also produce antimicrobial peptides in their skin secretions – the even more fun-to-say ‘bombinins’. 

Native to eastern mainland Europe – recorded here in the protected land of Poland’s Barycz Valley Landscape Park – they use their internal vocal sacs to produce their “whoop” call: the mournful, slow-motion honk immortalized here. Imagine the sound that clowns might make when they cry and you won’t be far off.

This homage to Motown plays like a prom theme in slow motion. Set against the backdrop of a hazy dance floor, Kerry Charles recalls a fleeting moment of recognition and infatuation on the eve of 2016. But some things just aren't meant to be…

Featuring Dustin Kaufman (of St. Lucia) on drums, and a ripper of a solo from preeminent saxophonist Max Cudworth, Charles and co will lull you into a daydream of synthesizers and simpler times. 

An earlier version of The One I Know was released in 2016 on the net label RareMP3s following a legendary New Years party in Philadelphia hosted by Naeem Juwan (Startisha / Spank Rock). That original version is featured as b-side to this single.

Blurring the lines between caricature and confessional, Kerry Charles isn't quite certain where his act ends and reality begins. Sardonic, yet sincere, abject but personal and indisputably groovy, Charles's timeless pop recordings are as enigmatic as their author.

Drawing influence from the likes of Prince, Hall and Oates and Steely Dan, Charles's obsessively produced tracks land somewhere between laid-back synth pop, smooth dad rock and seductive R&B.

The New Jersey-based songwriter and producer pairs his intimate falsetto with a lush palette of synthesizers and the inimitable sax stylings of Max Cudworth to produce a sound that longs for a time of polyester and purple rain.

Supported by an outstanding lineup of musicians (including Dustin Kaufman of St. Lucia), Charles and Cudworth spin a sensual yarn that will have you reaching to dim the lights and uncork that second bottle of malbec.

With his debut LP slated for early next year and even more in the works, Kerry Charles is just getting started.

Enregistrements réalisés par Francis de Frescheville les 23 et 24 avril 2017 dans la forêt du Risoux, dans le Jura. L'écoute au casque est indispensable pour localiser les diverses sources sonores.

	C'est une sorte de reportage sur le manège des tétras, décrit en six plages enregistrées avec les mêmes réglages. Ces séquences sont placées l'une après l'autre, séparées par un silence de deux secondes.
	1 - La nuit tombe. Les Tétras débarquent et s'installent dans les épicéas. On entend au loin un Moyen-duc et une Chouette de Tengmalm.
	2 - Cinq tétras égrènent leur chant dans le calme de la nuit.
	3 - La nuit se termine. Merles à plastron, puis Grives musiciennes. On entend une Bécasse.
	4 - Le jour est levé, l'ambiance s'enrichit, les tétras sont plus assurés, mais toujours branchés.
	5 - Les tétras descendent au sol et commencent leur parade. Les hoquets répétés viennent de deux grands corbeaux. On entend aussi un élevage d'huskies.
	6 - Affrontement de deux tétras et reconduite à la frontière.

Vic Mars – The Beacons
Clay Pipe Music is thrilled to announce "The Beacons," the enigmatic producer Vic Mars’ third LP for the label.  Since 2019’s ‘Inner Roads and Outer Paths’ his music has found a new audience having been used as the soundtrack to the game 'I am Dead' by British interactive studio Hollow Ponds. 
While his previous two albums were inspired by the pastoral landscapes of Herefordshire, 'The Beacons,'  embarks on a journey westward into Wales,  inviting listeners into the rugged terrain of the Brecon Beacons and the Black Mountains. Using a darker more ominous sonic palette, and pushing the sound of the Moog synthesizer to the fore, The Beacons captures the feel of mountains silhouetted against dramatic skies, craggy summits and the overall grandeur of the landscape and its rich folklore. 
Stories of plane crashes, a monument honouring a missing boy, and legends such the mysterious door within Llyn Cwm Llwch lake— said to open to an invisible island - all helped shape the making of the record. With the addition of live drums, viola, a Juno 60 and field recordings alongside his distinctive Mellotrons and flutes, Vic has explored new ground, but still maintained the melodic interest and home spun charm of his earlier records.
Although now based in London Vic grew up in Hereford, in winter time the distant ice capped peaks of the Beacons served as a childhood barometer, a hopeful indicator that the city might also be graced with snow. In better weather there were days out with family or friends, clambering up Pen-y-fan or visiting the beautiful waterfalls at Ystradfellte. All these formative experiences seep into the music on this record, weaving an enchanting spell that captures the vastness of the mountain ranges and the stories they tell.

The word 'Sirena' is borrowed from the Spanish language which means a mythological mermaid. Even as early as the Greek and Roman civilizations, there exists the mythological maiden, 'Sirena', the goddess of seafarers.

One of the most formidable fretless electric bassists in the post-Jaco Pastorius era, Texas native and current Barcelona resident Gary Willis joins forces with Catalan keyboardist Albert Bover and Budapest-born drummer Gergo Borlai on this exhilarating take on the electric piano trio. Co-founder (with guitarist Scott Henderson) of the premiere fusion band Tribal Tech and former member of Wayne Shorter’s band, Willis and his highly interactive crew shift deftly from slamming funk (“Old School”) to percolating fusion (“Disconnectivity”) to aggressive swingers (“Change Agent,” ”Move”) while embracing quiet ballads (Paul McCandless’ “Amaryllis,” Milton Nascimento’s evocative “Tarde” or Willis’ aptly-titled “Dream”) with uncommon sensitivity and a lyrical touch. They also turn in expressive interpretations of the Lennon-McCartney classic “Norwegian Wood” and Bill Evans’ “We Will Meet Again.” And the album closes on a poignant note with Willis’ tasty, subtly reharmonized rendition of the Depression era standard “For All We Know,” a tune famously covered by the likes of Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Nina Simone and Donny Hathaway.

Says the great bassist of his impressive sidemen on Retro: “Gergo is an incredible drummer. I had done some playing with him in Budapest, and since he moved to Barcelona Albert and I have been able to work up some nice chemistry as a trio with him.
This new record is about us playing together. It’s not about big productions or anything, it’s just Rhodes, bass and drums. It’s a totally different direction from what I did last time (on 2007’s Actual Fiction, also on Abstract Logix). It shows what can happen when you just make it about the interpretation of the material and how we play together. And for that reason it’s maybe more personal than anything I’ve done before.”

From the modal opener “Change Agent” to the bubbling “Old School” (which recalls the old school funk-fusion of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters) to the atmospheric “Tarde,” these three kindred spirits demonstrate a remarkable capacity to groove in loose-tight fashion throughout Retro. They collective burn through a labyrinth of chord changes on the uptempo romp “Move,” which is fueled by Willis’ urgent walking bass lines, and settle into on mellow accord on Oregon’s floating “Amaryllis” and a chill 3/4 take on the Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood.” Bover proves to be both a consummate accompanist and accomplished soloist from track to track while Borlai’s crisp, polyrhythmic pulse and supple brushwork fuel the proceedings. Willis’ virtuosic solo contributions here, particularly on “Disconnectivity” and “Move,” show why he is regarded as one of the most outstanding bassists on the scene today.

“I just wanted to feature the fun of playing together and the expression that comes out in this stripped-down setting,” says Willis of his fifth album as a leader overall and second for Abstract Logix. “Whatever direction it’s going, we’re going to try to get into it pretty deep.”  They’ve succeeded in brilliant fashion on Retro.
