With a nod to late 60s / 70s American 'bossa nova', Summer's Almost Here is the first single from my new album A New Kind of Fool.

It took me 25 years to make my debut album Gods in Brasil and only a few months to make the second album. What's with that, right? Well, it was just so much fun that when I had a chance to get the band together again one more time earlier this year, we decided to record more of my songs. Some new and some from the bottom of the drawer where they've been for decades.

Summer's Almost Here

Written in 1993 this Steely Dan / Dr John inspired song was finally recorded in 2020 for my second album A New Kind of Fool.

Sometimes is a song I wrote in 1993 before moving to Rio. At the time I was listening to a lot of what my friends and I called FM albums (these days AOR or Yacht Rock) - 70s stuff from Dr John, Michael Franks, Tony Joe White and of course, Steely Dan.

This was the first track we recorded at the February session at Namouche Studios and the song just worked, setting a tone for the whole album session.

This song features an old school long intro with a neat drone on electric sitar, played by Kassin, a latin style bass figure by Alberto Continentino and Pedrinho on Teischord vintage organ.

Drums, Macio Moretti from Mitch & Mitch and percussion the great Domenico Lancellotti, with swooping vocals by the uber talented Leticia Pedroza from Volupz.

Gary took 25 years to make his debut Gods in Brasil but less than 1 year to make his follow up. Songs from the vaults newly recorded with the same great band featuring touches of Steely Dan, Marcos Valle & Leon Ware, Brazilian Boogie, 70s Samba Soul and even a hint of Scott Walker.

The third single from my follow up album A New Kind of Fool, Daisy is inspired by 1970s samba soul by the likes of Jorge Ben, Os Originais do Samba, Orlandivo etc. Arrangement by Alberto Continentino adds to the vintage feel and I love Kassin's short guitar solo near the end of the track.

This is a song I wrote just a few weeks before going into the studio to record my second album A New Kind of Fool.

It was one of those moments when I'd been doodling on the guitar for hours until I got annoyed that nothing was sounding good, I got up and put the guitar on it's stand, but for some reason I reached back and sat down and immediately started playing the riff that became Tudo Bem Tudo Bom.

In my mind it had a kind of Gilberto Gil 1970s feel but by the time we got into the studio it was moving to more of a groove. Domenico Lancellotti moved from percussion to drums for this song and has his idiosyncratic samba groove. I had wanted a clavinet sound for this track with the feeling of the classic 1977 Orlandivo album with Joao Donato arrangements.
Piotr 'Pedrinho' Zabrodzki found the Panda 49 organ lying in the corner of the studio and immediately started riffing some staccato clavi sounds. Suddenly the song took off.

The lyrics were a feel good anthem from before anyone but the Chinese had really heard of Covid and it seemed an appropriate message song to release for New Year of 2021.
