Janis Joplin was not only a legend, she was a rare legend. If you live in the Laguna Beach area, chances are you have heard an amazing local singer that many people compare to Janis. Her name is Anesha Rose. And Janis isn't the only singer she's compared to. If you go to her website you'll read this, "Anesha Rose sounds like Adele, Steve Nicks, and Janis Joplin all wrapped into one." I discovered Anesha singing at The Marine Room in Laguna Beach and recorded her in my studio on a song written by Ron Kempton, an incredible guitarist/songwriter. 

The story goes like this. . . Ron, one of my students, wrote a tribute to Janis Joplin called Port Arthur (the birthplace of Janis). In the song, Ron writes about The Landmark Hotel (where Janis died). It's an incredibly moving song, and when Ron told me he wanted a singer like Janis to sing it, well, the very next weekend I discovered Anesha and knew she was the one. 
Though there have been several delays on completing this recording due to the pandemic and a recent move, the wait has been well worth it. I present to you the World Premiere release of Port Arthur by Ron Kempton, featuring Anesha Rose on vocals; with Ron Kempton, Joseph De Natale and Gustavo E Aranibar on guitars; and Dan Schreiber and Lars Jorgensen on piano. I'm played bass and drums and arranged, mixed and mastered Ron's masterpiece. I have total confidence that this recording will be picked up for licensing on several media -- film, television, commercials, video games, etc.

The idea behind this song is from the perspective of a person who has become overcome by numbness and cannot feel emotion any longer. This person can't even cry.  They've come to the point where they want to feel emotion again and nothing they do is helping.  Not even listening to their favorite music.  So they get an idea...to find a songwriter who will write a song just for them to make them feel emotion again; to make them able to even cry again.  This is a short excerpt demo; a work-in-progress.  I will continue building this song and complete it over the next several months.

I correctly and truthfully refer to PJ TOBIN as an up-and-coming legendary artist out of Ireland. Using cutting-edge technology owned and operated by Abbey Road Studios, Universal Music and AudioMovers -- and employing a revolutionary approach to mixing and mastering I've developed over the last 30 years, I have had the honor and pleasure of working with PJ for the last year, not only producing, mixing and mastering his premiere album -- but also working with PJ on the creation of an upcoming documentary about his life and music. 

Directed by Award-Winning International Film Director Lorenzo Sisti, the final shots for the documentary are being filmed simultaneously here in Southern California and in Ireland. Lorenzo and I were recently the recipients of an International Film Festival Award for Best Soundtrack for his film "The Gift" which I mixed.

"Headed Home" is the latest single that I've produced for Aaron Davison, founder of HowToLicenseYourMusic.com.  Aaron is an incredible singer/songwriter and guitarist.  When I first heard this track, it was a couple guitars and two vocalists (Aaron and Michael James). It struck me as a fantastic example of timeless songwriting and heartfelt vocals with great guitar work.  As soon as I heard the song all the way through, I was left with the same emotional lift that I experienced as a kid listening to Simon & Garfunkel, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Lennon and McCartney.  As producer, I added several elements, but I was careful not to add too much, as the raw essence of this song must be preserved, in my opinion.  So, I played an upright bass track part, some percussion, a few piano licks here and there and added some additional "beach boy" type background vocal parts.  The result is an arrangement that I heard in my head the first time I listened to this song, and so far it seems to strike a common pleasing chord in listeners around the world.  I then studied several recordings of hit songs that gave me this same emotional boost and I mixed and mastered this song in the tradition of the '70's Folk Rock Anthems, which some consider the zenith of sound recording production.
