Why, from childhood's first lesson,
Was the old man's rule the direction?
At nursery, at school, the same old plea,
(Though by high school, I was finally free.)
So I ask: Does mere aging deserve my due?
Just growing old, and respect comes to you?

Because we were ruled by the stiff, ancient pricks,
Clinging to power like barnacles on sticks.
From dotage to the grave, they held their damn seat,
And when one old fool dropped, they replaced the dead meat.
Another old sod I was bound to revere,
By default, by rote, with a sinking fear!

I peered through the barbed wire at a different, bright world,
Where the young and ambitious had banners unfurled.
But here, in the shadows, while they soared to the light,
We mourned some dead bastard who lost his long fight.
I’m out of that Eastern Bloc’s suffocating sway,
But watching them now, nailing fences all day,
Rebuilding the border, the coils sharp and new,
I get it: A young face can take power, it’s true,
But he’ll only leave office on a pine, carried out.
(You won’t bloody sack him, there's no pulling out.)
