When I first had this idea it was originally planned to celebrate the summer holidays, but life got in the way, so a few weeks later than planned...
I made an all vinyl mix entirely from music that was released while I was in Year 9 (1987/88). It was a time of great change, with UK hip hop pioneers like Derek B gracing the charts for the first time, while influential visionaries Coldcut got involved with house and kickstarted the careers of soul singers such as Yazz. On the alternative side, we also experienced the beginnings of what would become known as the Stourbridge scene, as it began to emerge from the squat party era. I believe it was a great time to be in Year 9.
Today's Year 9s face a weird paradox; while there is undoubtedly more incredible music released each week than ever before, across a vast range of genres, finding it would be incredibly difficult for them at first, having to cut through so much more manufactured, generic 'big business music'. Of course, that was present in the 80s too, with businessmen like Pete Waterman taking advantage of the popularity of TV shows like Neighbours and Home and Away, but the amount of money big businesses commit to drowning out anything remotely creative these days is phenomenal, and for todays youth, creates a wall of plastic pollution even bigger than the one contaminating the oceans.
I had a great time putting this together, despite its technical difficulties, such as 7" mixes fading quicker that Peter Mandelson's comeback, and pop records not keeping time with themselves for more than 16 beats, I hope you enjoy it xx
