Goodnight "Tangent" is a collection of 5 songs that may seem like digressions from their debut album "Versions" but are, in fact, deeper off-shoots of the sonic worlds the band touched upon on the album. The duo (Dan De Lara and Darrell De Lara) approached these songs as if they were creating a score for a short film—in fact, two tracks were created for the feature film "The Five Rules of Success" (directed by Orson Oblowitz) which one 1/2 of Goodnight scored.

In hopes of fusing their brand of electronic, new wave, shoegaze and pop with a filmic quality, the group collaborated with Steph Shiu. Daniel and Steph recently scored the debut Peter Do SS22 NYFW show. Steph provides the only overtly human touch with her voice on the title track "Tangent" and "In My Mind" as she adds a new character and point of view into the Goodnight universe.


"Tangent" steps into a slow burner acid house realm while "Howl" reveals an aggression that could only be calmed by the minimal and bare feel of "In My Mind" while “V Rules" provides a soundtrack to your escape as you drive away into the night. The extended dream dub of “Tangent” bookends the EP like an echo that has returned just in time to the listener.

GASS slinks out after dark again with it’s second release by Blaqstarr. The Baltimore club innovator has been around for a minute and the experience and confidence of this young music industry veteran shows across 5 accomplished and distinctive tracks on his Moan her, Lease her EP. 

The EP opens with Lovely Hypnotise. A single piano note sounds before beats, strings and yearning vocals enter, swinging hard. Veering from lane to lane taking hip hop, indie, folk and adding neon stripes while shifting through club gears for a fast moving dynamic soul sound. Many Midnights drives deeper into the night, keeping an acoustic guitar strum, kitted out with a percussive momentum and a hooky sing along melody while conjuring more deeply the after hours, otherworldly, nightlight mood. 

The title track Moan her, Lease her marks a transition to the second half of the record. Vicious handclaps signal change and the acoustic elements disintegrate to reform as darker, more insistent and trapped out sound vibrations. Vocal samples chopped, looped like the club and leading from the first soulful vocal half of the EP to the darker hash funk and death rap of Ho­ney which, because it’s dirty, comes in a ’Clean Version’ favouring the big soul vocal. 

Closing out the record is On My Bed feat. Joy Postal, Mia Loving and Rachel2G. A loopy, at first dusty sounding drill, charmed into form by echo and repeated vocals before a spoken word lyrics turns it into a time travelling electro bump that brings the guitar strum back but rides out in a minor symphony of sounds. Over the edge, into the distance and onto infinity, gone. 

With the sensous and instinctive nature of the music it makes perfect sense that the audio release is accompanied by an Erotic Coloring Book by Baltimore Illustrator Jimmy Malone. 

GASS is a London based label and collective that provides a platform for new music and art, influenced by evolving technology and underground dance culture. It is led and curated by international DJ Mamiko Motto. 

Blaqstarr first came to prominence in the city of Baltimore where as a 16 year old he scored his first of many city wide club hits. He went on to kick start Diplo’s Ma Decent label with its first release, his ‘Supastarr ’EP, got sampled by Lil Wayne, worked with Common and most recently worked with Skrillex on the latest M.I.A release.

On GASS 003  Dreamtrak sets thrusters to boost and conjures a musical ecstasy that is pure programmed science fiction - machined, tooled and coded but speaking to the stars of breath, sweat and desire. 
 
The title track ‘Open Source’ is a software love song from the future. A time capsule that chimes to life as it begins. The syrupy bassline lopes in and gets welded to the astral remnants of a hazy boom bap. It’s an interplanetary bounce. Robots too feel funk as mechanical voices burble the refrain. “Why don't you come over, I'm ready. Ooooh, collaboration. We can do some coding, or whatever. Ooooh, integration”. A sweet robot modulated voice singing an algorithm of desire. Dreamtrak the producer has become a self generating pop musique machine, streaming in a continuous signal through planetary debris and lights shows on distant planets. Human, android and alien alike humming to the vibrating pulse across galaxies to the very edge of space.

What I Did On Holiday is a perpetual motion soundtrack, intro and outro but no peaks or drops really.  Just movement, an exercise in poetry and ambience, an in-the-zone therapy for emulating seaside trips and universal vistas through sound during deep space travel. Digital, biological and mechanical have long fused and the synchronicity of things is complete. Machines, flesh and music are blended into a beautiful science fantasy of yearning and anticipation. The system operator programming new worlds and old ideas into our delicate dreams. 

Dreamtrak is the personal musical alias of Oliver Horton, a London based producer whose engineering skills and production finesse have served artists such as Foals & Chicks On Speed while as Dreamtrak he has remixed artists such Little Boots, Hot Chip and Mø.

The ‘Open Source’ EP is the third release on London based GASS Records and was preceeded by Ep’s from Detroit Techno Militia Body mechanic(GASS001) and Blaqstarr GASSD002).

Its Sunday. We’re in our studio preparing several new mixes and radio appearances for next week and we came across a mix we recorded in 2003 of our favourite 90s records at the time. We sat down with a bottle of wine this afternoon and listened to it and we decided to share it because we feel like it came out as a quite good overview of trip-hop / acid jazz era that we were so into at the time.
