Berlin-based DJ and producer Simina Grigoriu has been a wildly dominant figure on the European techno circuit in recent years, delivering a consistent stream of stand-out records for the underground community. With each passing opus, Simina continues to raise the bar on her technical prowess and sheer artistry, and having already unveiled a string of releases in 2023 for leading imprints OFF Recordings, Dolma Records and Kaligo Records, the contemporary star now returns to her own esteemed Kuukou Records to present another intoxicating techno cut – Propeller Punks will be out on July 7 across all streaming platforms. 

The welcome return to her own thriving electronic music house lands just a few months after her globally-adored single Radiocarbon. Much like its predecessor, Propeller Punks presents as an immaculately refined techno cut that’s founded on crisp, hard-hitting percussion and acid-laced synth work. Infectious from start-to-finish, the latest addition to her discography is another masterclass in timeless techno that gives us profound insight into her Berlin roots. Conducive to dark, intimate club rooms and festival main stages alike, this late-night number breeds a dreamy nostalgia for 90’s rave culture; a flair we’ve come to know and love from Grigoriu’s ever-impressive output.  

An emblematic platform within our beloved genre, Kuukou Records has forged a distinct sound-print since its inception in 2016, one that blends techno grit with melodic appeal. Spear-headed by Simina herself, the establishment puts a firm focus on progression and innovation, whilst ensuring that the founding sensibilities of techno are remembered and celebrated. As such, Kuukou Records has grown to be one of the most successful techno labels of the past decade, channelling an appealing blend of releases from both dance music veterans and newcomers.

Hugely prolific German producers Kaiserdisco are back on one of their regular labels for a sixth fine EP of their searing grooves. That label is Drumcode, and the EP is Toleranz, a fantastic four track affair that features a fine remix from Pleasurekraft.

Hamburg based Kaiserdisco have been active since 2008, and in that time have put out 30 EPs and nearly 50 remixes. As well as running their own labels, KD Music and KD RAW, they are regulars on the likes of Suara and Tronic and are as able to headline a big festival stage as they are to lock down a more intimate club. Drumcode, of course, is one of the day’s foremost techno labels, with boss Adam Beyer ensuring only the most compelling beats make their way onto his Swedish imprint.

Up first is Get Enough, seven minutes of seductive techno that has an almost machine-gun like disco synth firing across the groove. It is a rumbling peak time track with real force and energy that will bring any floor to life. The title track, Toleranz, is a gritty and stripped back basement cut with dry hits and burrowing acid bass that takes you deep into the night. Cobra then proves this pair have real breadth in the studio and is a barrel chested house cut with more big hits, rib rattling bass and incendiary techno hi hats that really get you on your toes.

Remixing are the tech duo of Pleasurekraft, whose releases on Octopus and Mood Records have won them plenty of DJ and dancing fans. They layer in some dark melodies to SQ80 and build it steadily before allowing the militant drums and crisp snares to explode and drive you and the whole club forwards.

This is another big and high impact release from both Drumcode and Kasierdisco that is sure to make its mark on anyone who hears it.

Ramiro Lopez drops the electrifying follow up to his ‘Pretending’ EP from May this year. 

For almost a decade, Spain’s Ramiro Lopez has established himself as one his country’s leading proponents of techno, with strong releases across labels that include Suara, Intec, Octopus Recordings and Bedrock. He first debuted on Drumcode in 2016 with the rousing collaborative track ‘Clap Your Hands’ that ranked among one of the label’s standout tracks for the year. With one Drumcode release already under his belt in 2017 and a new label project Odd Recordings with fellow DC cohort Arjun Vagale recently launched, he’s enjoying another strong year.

His return to the label comes in the form of ‘Being Alone’, a powerful trio of cuts, all of which featured in Adam Beyer’s Awakenings Festival Day 1 performance. The title track is a multi-layered weapon, propelled by a dizzying vocal, swirling synth effects and pin-sharp percussion that build toward a smooth classy finish. ‘Dark Science’ is an effective stomper brought to life by a bell chime hookline and undulating synth melody ensuring its peak-time prowess. ‘Der Raum’ rounds out the EP, highlighted by Lopez’s deft drum work, proceeded by a driving, euphoric climax.

Egypt’s Raxon makes his Truesoul debut with a searing four-tracker.

The talented DJ/producer has been a marked man on Adam Beyer’s musical radar ever since his stunning remix of Noir & Olivier Giacamotto’s ‘Reste’ landed during the summer of 2016. His productions have elsewhere found a home on Diynamic, Noir, Tronic and more recently Ellum, reinforcing his ability to craft powerful techno that still retains an emotive edge. 

His maiden outing for Truesoul is masterful. ‘Fobidden Quest’ is seven minute of low-end muscular bass that’s heavy on peak-time rush. ‘Orix’ is continues in this vein and is a groove-ridden bass-heavy gem. ‘Flight Call’ demonstrates his musical breadth, providing an interlude from the dancefloor with an immersive ambient work. The EP is rounded out with ‘Heliopolis’, the EP’s title track named after Raxon’s hometown. It’s a stirring composition driven by uplifting pads, tension-building bassline melodies and a laser-kissed build up. 

Support for this EP already comes in strong, including Maceo Plex, Solomun, Nicole Moudaber, Carl Cox, B.Traits, Tale of Us, John Digweed, Adriatique and of course Adam Beyer.
