Fresh off back-to-back seasons of Tuluminati rituals, these two well-worn chug warriors of dark disco have kept Mexico dancing throughout the pandemic, maintaining a prolific release schedule on top of a world-leadingly busy calendar of gigs. 

Thomass Jackson turns in a pair of wonky eyes-closed bangers with the modular-flecked ‘Big Plastic Room,’ and the restrained ecstatic power of ‘Slow Train.’ Iñigo fires back with the twerky, tribal madness of ‘Jungle Tungle’ and the meandering mushroom-inspired-madness of ‘Hipocampos.’

Compass Point, Muscle Shoals, Sun Studios, Studio One, Cargo Studios, Spaceward Studios : all seminal recording studios. Here in Glasgow we are very fortunate to have Green Door Studio which is a free thinking hub for wild, original creativity and great sounding analogue recordings. Several Optimo Music releases including Golden Teacher were born out of recording sessions there and indeed, this will be the 6th release on Optimo Music to be recorded at Green Door. They deserve credit as my secret A&R division occasionally getting in touch and saying "we think you might like this" which inevitably leads to me scraping my brain off the floor and deciding I have to release it as a record asap. This 5 track EP by Whilst was the latest transmission from Green Door that my ears fell in love with. How to describe it? I have no idea except to say that it is wildly inventive and incredibly free music made by several individuals who are unnervingly young to be making these sounds. They describe themselves as follows -

"Formed originally as a jam-based project in the ever-fertile analogue studio ‘Green Door’, Whilst jump seamlessly between free jazz, primitive electronics, dubby post-punk, North African and motorik stlyings, underpinning their sound with a strong punk ethos".

Released February 24th 2014 on 12" with limited edition hand made silk screened sleeve and on digital. If repressed, 2nd pressing will come in a generic Optimo Music sleeve. Distributed by Kompakt.

Tofistock have decided to take us to the movies for their fist compilation, enlisting the help of Olsvanger, Lily Haz, and Emma de Seze among others to help us settle for the main feature, complete with popcorn, trailers and anti piracy messages.
One of the standout performances and shoe in for an Oscar nominee is Drama Goddess, with Holy Mountain. Inspired in no small part by the Alejandro Jodorowski avant garde classic, the track rings out with droney guitars distant echo of birdsong, tabla drums as a quiet psychedelia sets in and overcomes the atmosphere of the track which doesn't sound a million miles from bands like the Brian Jonestown Massacre at their very best. 
If you only see one movie this year, make it one of those big Marvel franchise films. but if you only buy one compilation based on an EP, make it Movie Makers on Tofistock.

Strapontin: "This song is a poetical statement about a man who doesn't follow society's norms to find his own freedom. It refers to a kind of post-70's hippie utopia but I still find strong connections to our present time. I love the way Brigitte Fontaine & Areski both mock everything with naive and insolent attitude. Although I made it sounds darker (as actual world is), like a looped mantra dub trying to cast a spell, disenchant the blinded and rise the black sheep."
