Blanche DuBois, a fading Southern belle, arrives on the doorstep of her younger sister Stella in New Orleans, having lost their ancestral home ‘Belle Reve’. This savage satire on bourgeois society tells the tale of the villainous but irresistible Macheath (‘Mack the Knife’) a notorious thief, pimp and murderer, and his entourage of criminals. The Threepenny Opera caused an immediate sensation when it opened in Berlin in 1928, changing the shape of musical theatre forever. It is now one of the best-loved musicals of all time.

Brecht's sardonic tale of beggars, thieves and prostitutes is a fierce social and political critique, which is vividly complemented by Weill's amazing score, an exhilarating fusion of American Jazz and German Cabaret. With an instantly-recognisable catalogue of musical numbers and featuring a live orchestra, alongside some of Ireland’s most exciting singers and actors, The Threepenny Opera promises to be an intoxicating and unforgettable theatrical event. Noel Coward’s sparkling mix of wit and cocktails, The Vortex sets out to beguile and provoke in equal measure.

Enter the bright and charming world of flamboyant socialite Florence Lancaster and her talented young son Nicky.  Florence is a fading beauty enjoying an affair with a much younger man, Tom.  Nicky, a successful composer, returns from Paris with his new fiancée, Bunty.  When Tom and Bunty fall in love, Florence and Nicky face a crisis.  Their brilliant repartee and easy wit is slowly revealed to be a superficial surface under which lie real, human struggles.  In confronting his vain, self-absorbed mother can Nicky break free from his own demons?

The Vortex was first performed in 1924 where its subject matter of sex and drugs scandalised London.  Now, 90 years on, it is just as delightful, thrilling and, in the words of the author, ‘un peu shocking’.
