This EP represents Deviceful's journey in exploring new ways to express the depths of sound and to tell stories through music. As the tracks unfolded, it became clear that music holds color, and color holds music; the two join as an evolving, gradient landscape of vision, imagination, and technology, connected to our lives—a true Gradient Drift.

A special mention goes to track 2, Construct Dust. Several years ago, Ott visited Don Brown, aka Deviceful, at his studio.while he was in town (they had been in touch for years, and it was great to finally have a proper visit for a few days). After experimenting with some gated chords, DBX compressors, Ott’s incredible bass line, and some backing percussion, a groove emerged. It was just a short construct, though, and ultimately ended up in the hard drive dustbin. Ott believed it deserved to become a full track, so here it is—even if “soon” turned into years. His original bass line is still in the intro, and the final creation stays true to it.

The set is a journey throughout all the different styles i love to explore in my productions, from psybass 6 midtempo glitch hop, to drum and bass and jungle finishing the set with some hi-energy dnb tunes from artists i deeply admire.

Makyo taps into his love of roots reggae for this deep, dark and dreamy cover of Things Ah Get Tough by the legendary Bristol band Talisman. The Tokyo-based producer transforms the original, while keeping true to the essence of the original, whose lyrics meditate on the greed and destruction caused when corporations benefit from a nation’s downfall.

Makyo has charted his own course through the world of dub, often with an eastern or tribal twist, since the early 90s, working with collaborators like Bill Laswell, Natacha Atlas and Muslimgauze, but with this release, he’s entering a new phase. 

“I’ve listened to this song for years,“ notes Makyo, “and it just felt more relevant than ever when I started working on it in 2024, with all the wars, election madness, wildfires, inflation and nuclear posturing. The mood just seemed to reflect where people were at.”

Having overcome crippling tinnitus and hyperacusis (to the point that he couldn’t even listen to music for several years), Makyo’s finding joy in the past whilst looking to the future, with this sparse and bittersweet version of Talisman’s tune the first in a series of contemporary covers he has planned.
