Hottrax mainstay David Berrie returns to the label this March with his ‘Warped Connection’ EP. 

With previous releases on Hot Creations, Cuttin’ Headz, Vatos Locos, and Play It Say It alongside appearances at institutions such as DC10, Space Miami and Output, New York DJ and producer David Berrie’s reputation within the US and beyond continues to build. Returning to his Hottrax family, Berrie delivers the groove-laden three-tracker ‘Warped Connection’ EP. 

"This EP draws elements from the past and future. The front track 'Warp 2000' was put together at the start of 2020 ironically right before, what felt like to me, entering a real time warp into a different world". - David Berrie.

Swinging basslines and tumbling percussion kick things off as ‘Warp 2000’ couples stirring vocals and timely stabs, before ‘Body Motions’ throws electro-infused synths and loopy vocal samples over rumbling low-ends. To close, ‘Mass Connections’ serves up a trippy cut as spaced out pads convulse around shuffling percussion, frolicking keys and warped samples.

Hatikvah have also submitted a beautifully deep rework of the Silicone Soul original, which will be an exclusive on the Soma 20 Anniversary box set, released in September.

Incredible as it seems, this year marks twenty years since the launch of Johnny D’Mairo’s Henry Street Music label. To celebrate, BBE is marking the occasion with a sumptuous five- disc CD retrospective, a fitting tribute to one of the most important of all house labels. This is one of the most extensive grand summations yet done of a dance label.
Henry Street Music exemplified its era as much as Trax and Nu-Groove had theirs. Come the mid-‘90s, the disco cut-up became ubiquitous, as thousands tried to emulate the success of Henry Street’s first big killer, The Bucketheads’ Tha Bomb –still a dancefloor staple two decades on.
Many of the movers and shakers of the day had their best moments on Henry Street, and they’re all here: Johnnick, Armand Van Helden, DJ Duke, DJ Sneak, Dirty Harry, Davidson Ospina, Todd Terry, Mateo and Matos, Brutal Bill, Josh Wink, even the UK’s own Ashley Beedle, and many more –a veritable roll-call of the premiere-league of dance at the time, an era when dance music still seemed incredibly fertile and the link with its own past was still vital.
Some of the American originals can struggle to get props among the countless mutations of house out there vying for attention in today’s digitalized dance scene, but the real house-heads always knew to check them, and will recognize this as quality product, through and through.

Henry Street (named after Brooklyn homeboy Johnny’s neighbourhood) always had a ‘New York’ vibe, and even when drawing its producers from further afield, the label encapsulated the city’s melting-pot of talent and raw, bristling energy... energy captured here, and exploding off these remastered tracks like it’s 1999 all over again!

Alongside the massive dancefloor anthems from the likes of Kenny Dope and Armand Van Helden are some real gems that got away, some exclusive mixes, and the thoughts of Johnny D, one of the prime-movers of the New York dance scene even before he came up with his own label, responsible for countless hits as promotions man and as dance A&R at Atlantic. Never one for the limelight, Johnny’s own story is nonetheless inextricably bound up with the transition from disco through house to the ubiquity of dance music today.
So... dust off those dancing shoes, and get ready to feel the heat, it’s one more time for the Henry Street Hustle!

It was in 2009 when Paride Saraceni envisioned his rework of the Doors' classic 'Light My Fire', a project which never came to life until 2015 when he decided to create a work that would not only translate the classic rock masterpiece into a postmodern dance-floor tune.
'Jim's Prophecy' is however not simply a rework of the Doors' classic hit but a seamless collage of several of their works as well as of a 1970 interview to Morrison himself in which he predicts the future of music, from which the track adopts its title.

It is the format by which these events come to our ears that Saraceni found inspiration from, since not only Morrison predicted the advent of the one-man band surrounded by 'machines and tapes' but it is this statement itself a tape recording in its own right. The conceptual playfulness that this postmodern work is characterised by is given by both its content and its container, since what is being revoked by the means of this remix is both the essence of the band's live sounds and live performance adapted to nowaday rhythms, as well as the way in which these have came together by the very means (tapes and machines) which Morrison spoke of in his interview, this last one as well being evocatively employed in the mix, making of the remixer (and in a way of Morrison himself as well - as he directs the dialogue within the track) the true one-man band in relation to and within the various fragments of time and tape-space assembled into one single recording.

Appearing on ’Kish Kash’, Basement Jaxx’s third studio album, the unforgettable single was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance Recordings category and also reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart and number 2 on Hot Dance Club Play in the US. ‘Good Luck’ also featured as the opening theme of 2004 anime movie Appleseed, Victoria’s Secret fashion show in 2003 and 2005, and a version without lyrics was used for the opening sequence of BBC’s UEFA Euro 2004.

Real name Bülent Gürler, German producer Butch has been a formidable force within house and techno for over two decades, enchanting crowds from all across the globe with his technical performances. Highly regarded for producing compelling grooves, his releases have appeared on labels like Desolat, Cocoon, Rekids and Sei Es Drum, not to mention collaborating alongside Virginia, C. Vogt and Ricardo Villalobos (as Butric).

Receiving regular early support from Villalobos, Butch has provided three different renditions of ‘Good Luck’ and the ‘Remix’ is a rhythmic roller from the off, featuring numerous elements from the original whilst generating a cacophony of percussion as Kekaula’s iconic voice is chopped and looped – the result is high- octane and geared for the dancefloor. The ‘Dub’ strips things back, purely using segments of the vocal for instrumental purposes as a whirring bassline joins deep synths and mesmerising effects. Tying it all together, the ‘Drum Tool’ is a high-tempo percussive cut produced for peaktime DJ sets.

The latest Intec release is a special package in honour of a true house classic originally released at the birth of the genre in 1985, and that features two new reworked versions of Chip E’s anthemic track “Time To Jack”.

Created in collaboration with Chip E, the two new versions have been produced by label boss Carl Cox titled “Back 2 Jack” and pay homage to the iconic vocal, which should be instantly familiar to house fans of all generations.

Anyone who has ever watched or read a documentary covering the history of house music will know how influential Chip E’s original was, as many accredit it with being one of the records that coined the term “Jacking”.

Reworking a classic so iconic arguably takes an icon to do it, and working on that logic, Carl Cox is the obvious man for the job.

Starting with a solid kick drum as the track's foundation, Carl's updated version is all around bigger and with a booming sound.

It stays true to the original, keeping the bassline and vocals but also bringing the production up to date with a thickened sound, adding some aggressive modulation to the instantly recognisable bass hook.

Re-recording the vocal has also given it some added presence and really brought out the commanding intensity that many know and love and has done it in a respectful way that compliments a piece of music now over thirty years old.
