黑芝麻 (Hēi zhī ma) invites you to retreat inwards - on both the physical plane and within the depths of your psyche - as part of the Pure Space Home Listening series.

Imagined during lockdown, Pure Space Home Listening // 黑芝麻和朋友们 (Hēi zhī ma and friends) probes home listening in the context of isolation.

As an artist, 黑芝麻 leans into the more emotive facets of sound, utilizing sonic and cerebral contrasts to subtly lull the listener into a journey unforeseen. This release sees them infuse this approach within their collaborations with artists Merph, Shoeb Ahmad, Moktar and Zhi.

The artists explore the familiar feelings of solitude, urgency and release firmly etched into our collective consciousness, both synchronously and through their own distinct lens.

“I Miss You” lulls you in with emotive pads that float above a sharp breakbeat and voice notes engulfed with longing. “Take Me Anywhere” provides a feeling of relief, as groove-laden techno bounces off the walls and into the abyss. “Associations” is an introspective, spacious and haunting track you want to float on and on. As you glide between these offerings, the intro and outro tracks hold space for tender ruminations.

The release serves as an archive of a more contemplative and confined period, through the distant murmur of voice notes, the metamorphosing drone of ambient soundscapes, poetic reveries that hang in the air, the rattling percussion of a breakbeat or techno high-hat and the gentle backdrop hums of nature.

This is an immersive audiovisual experience. Filmmaker Jane Inyang reimagines the EP in a short film through different listening contexts during a day in isolation for the protagonist. This short film will be accessible by a QR code in an accompanying poster and zine, which will also feature artist photos, recipes and poetry alongside the work of artist Jacquie Meng and photographer Chanel Nguyen. There will also be a limited run of earrings by Joanne Leong.

100% of profits from this release will be donated to Firesticks Alliance, an Indigenous led network and aims to re-invigorate the use of cultural burning by facilitating cultural learning pathways to fire and land management.

We’re delighted to finally share with you PROXIMITY III, the third instalment of our annual Pure Space compilation series. Across the 19 tracks, 22 artists find synergy across the spectrum of experimental electronica.

Creeping through deep d’n’b, blisteringly fast idm, and percussive club cuts across to bass laden experimental music, blissful tech and peak energy techno, we hope this release provides an access point for all electronic music lovers to explore the depths of the so called ‘Australian’ subterranean music landscape.

100% of proceeds will be donated to Aboriginal Legal Services; based in Redfern it is the first Aboriginal Legal Service in Australia and the first free legal assistance service in the country. www.alsnswact.org.au

DJ Merlín and Match Box put their heads together on the long-anticipated split EP ‘Krafthaus001’. The powerful four-tracker draws on 303’s, squelchy analogue bass, and striking toms - all with a ‘90s twist - to create upfront dancefloor fillers. 

The prog specialists lay out a meticulous yet playful sound whilst channelling the collective spirit of Krafthaus, Kraft und Licht’s headquarters. Located in Amsterdam’s outskirts, the creative hub serves as a touching point for underground stalwarts to share visions and dive into sound explorations. 

Driven by the urge to challenge genre norms, Kraft und Licht’s mainstay DJ Merlín and power tandem Match Box showcase their deep add expansive sound with this release. Harnessing the past, defying the future - DJ Merlín and Match Box prove a solid sonic point.

Discoteca ends its first circle with a third mind blowing release from highly psychedelic mixologist KayTV. Under its green atmos, Shudder Bubble is an experimental clubbing tek tunnel. The drums and the bass as the guardian of your soul, Wave Speech twist all it needs to wobble a floor. Total leg slackener oo-koo-hé & Fancy Shamancy would make any nice thing an instant demon. Water Lilies is a bass-driven goa-inspired track featuring airy synths and percussion that echoes like aquatic ripples, creating a fluid and hypnotic soundscape.

In keeping with the organic minimalism that defines Geosmine's visual identity, Arroyo designed an artwork incorporating Pre-Columbian and Gothic art influences, centered around reptile figures.

Midheaven Records launches in 2021 with 'Force Majeure', the debut EP of Sydney/Eora-based amuwa (@a-m-u-w-a), aka 25-year-old Joshua Deering. Born and raised in the urban sprawl of Sydney CBD, Deering now brings 10 years of musical development to a head, where design and feel seamlessly enmesh. The EP draws from formative experiences immersed in the sounds of city noise, industrial zones, natural amphitheatres, and packed dance-floors. Familiar strains of electro, trance and bass music shift and meld into new, hybrid forms, driven by a synthetic-organic logic. Roiling subs and propulsive drums are engineered for impact, couched within mutating synth arrays. Untraceable oddities click, whirr and hum around the stereo field—subtle changes reward repeat, deep listening. Over four tracks, amuwa re-centres the whole body as listening technology—pursuing a trance-state that is grounded in the dance, not just for the head(s). This is a formidable debut.
