Schoeps CCM 2 Stereo Pair

First time trying out a loan pair of CCM 2's and man! I'm in-love with these microphones already.. such low noise and warmth, but also plenty of detail.

Thunderstorm woke me up at 6am so quickly got downstairs and recorded a few minutes with a Schoeps CCM 2 stereo pair.

Not long now before I have to return these Schoeps CCM 2's back so making the most of them. Such a transparent quality to the CCM 2 capsules and I'll most certainly miss their rich depth too and great handling noise too.

I failed attempt the day before due to embarrassingly leaving my batteries at home... you can tell I haven't been out in a while lol. The conditions were better for Waves that day too, but the lack of waves ended up me searching between the rocks more where I found even more interesting sounds.

It's been a weekend of beautiful weather so I've tried to balance the weekend out with my other half, spending a bit of time recording waves whilst we enjoyed over 11 miles of walking the coastline. This particular recorded required Rycote windjammer fur, which resulted in a little high frequency loss but, nothing the Schoeps CCM 2's can't handle in post. 

This is a rocky coastline but plenty of small waves crashing onto the rocks, sometimes supported by a warm thud, other times with a harsh slap, but the collection of sounds as the waves retreat are quite satisfying.

I've always shied away from recording waterfalls, as previously owned microphones would create mixed results but these Schoeps MK 2 capsules really sound great no matter what you point them at. This recording really shows how flat they are, as you can hear each and every layer of frequencies quite evenly, nothing jumps out as too harsh or unpleasant.

A familiar location to many locals, and a popular spot, but thankfully the cold weather put many people off so I had the entire place to myself today.. other than air traffic of course which was driving me cuckoo. This was all I got that didn't have planes in the background..

I've been wanting todo this for a while, but being a very busy public place, it always put me off, but I was surprised even the people walking by kept very quiet as they could see I was trying to capture the sound. 

Cwmbran Boating Lake has always been a special place for local people, alongside the Avon Lwyd River, it's a magnet for wildlife and this winter particularly has seen good Wildfowl numbers.

Sadly missed the dawn chorus on this occasion but I used the opportunity to find areas that balanced the sound of the river, whilst maintaining some bird calls from the woodland behind. It's a beautiful spot that I've come to love, but it can be a little hit or miss on the dog walker front. Either way, a lovely few hours along the river side.

Weather in April in the Uk is always varied. They don't call it April showers for no reason, but this one has been particularly stormy. Been up since 4:30am after a dawn chorus walk, which we almost cancelled because of this! Glad we didn't as it was still good, but I'm now home, comfy and dry listening to that monster passing through outside.

Hail Storm From Comfy Conservatory - MixPre - 6326.

Tried to get away without any wind protection on this session, as I had my hands full and getting those Rycote Furs on can be a pain in the ass unless you have two hands. Regretted it a little as I did have to repair a few bad wind gusts but also glad, as it meant that I could record those minute details better as the water passed over the rocks.

Stunning Sunrise on the Gwent Levels with very light winds, perfect for sound recording.

If I had only had a shelter in the Garden, I would have got so much more but due to the rain I had to bring the gear in, so I missed quite a lot of interesting sounding Fireworks and even missed flocks of Redwing going over, which is what I wanted to record, to highlight that Bonfire night always co-insides with peak bird migration. 

Either way, I did get this recording just before retiring back to the warmth of my home.

Bonfire Night From Garden MixPre - 6689

Took a lot of self motivation to get me out today with weather still being unpredictable from recent storms. Between heavy showers though it gave just about enough time to get recordings of these fabulous exotic birds whose proclivity for ornamental rowan berries bring them to areas that you wouldn't otherwise go looking for birds. This was the first time I've seem them in a new housing development, which is exactly what you're hearing in the background, new houses being built! which rather than fight against, I included the background as much as possible.

I seemed to have missed all the drama prior to hitting the record button. Sadly only managed one little rumble of thunder in the middle of this recording. Such a shame as prior it was quite aggressive and would have made a good recording.

Little bit of wind isn't such a bad thing and I need to remember this as it has put me off taking my sound gear when the forecast shows wind. I often forget that there's always ways you can work around wind, using trees, banks or mountains to block the worse of the wind and I also forget that it can also be a blessing, providing you where more elements to record. These waves on the local reservoir wouldn't be as intense as this if it weren't for the wind, and it can also cover up some unwanted urban sounds, which I also struggled with on this day as there was a tractor spraying the fields which was particularly noisy. I edited as much of it as I could out.

I did get myself ready to go somewhere and get a better recording of this storm but it rolled in fast! I don't think I would have had time to get anywhere decent, so settled for my garden again which is not a bad thing as it enabled me to keep myself and my gear dry. 

Ignore the Garden.. it's a work in progress at the new house.
