'Milkshake' is the first release from my new musical project - a reimagining of the original pop song by Kelis released in 2003, featuring Vegan Queen V on vocals.

It is available to download and stream for free. 

The song is a mash up of two things I can't stand - the dairy industry, which needlessly tortures cows, and the original version of this song.

'Simple Life' is the first single from my forthcoming album 'No Cages'.

It's a song about living in a world full of noise and how suffocating that can feel, especially for people who think and feel deeply.

'No Cages' is my third album, and my first in seven years. 

It features the singles 'Simple Life' and 'Incomplete'.

It is my first collection of predominantly animal rights songs and covers topics such as intensive chicken farming, toxic masculinity, humane-washing / greenwashing, and the perception of vegans by a non-vegan world. The project also covers other themes such as loss and loneliness, how technology is disconnecting us from the real world, escaping from the human race, and the beauty of the ground beneath our feet.

It has been a labour of love, taking over two years to complete, delayed by various set-backs, most noticeably damage to my vocal chords. 

The album features over 40 contributors from across the world, including Vegan Queen V, Liz Mitchell (Terrorvision), Ian Haywood, Giles Bryant, and Chaos Collective (Blur). It was recorded at Half-ton Studios in Milton by Neil Rogers, mastered by Pete Maher (U2, Pixies), and features artwork by Tom Jones.

'I Would Have Left This Party By Now (If It Wasn't For You)' is about being trapped in a situation you don't want to be in, whether that's a literal party, or something else, like the mess we currently find ourselves in in the world. 

It's a love song of sorts, about finding strength through love and the people you care about in your life, in this case, my wife Ali.

'No Cages' is the title track from my third album, released Friday 4th July.

I wrote the song a couple of years ago, shortly before I started a new job working for an animal protection charity. I was inspired by the work of the charity and am proud to be part of it now. We work tirelessly to end the abuse of animals raised for food, and one of the things we aim to do is end the use of cages. 

So this a protest song calling for an end to the inhumane use of any form of cage and entrapment, and a reflection on what it says about us and our society that we enslave so many sentient beings across the world.

'Incomplete' will be released on 20th June 2025 and will be available to download and stream from all major sites, as well as from my Bandcamp store. 

'Incomplete' began life as a couple of scribbled lines of lyrics that I wrote down when I went on my first solo tour back in 2016. These became the first two lines of the song:

'There's a piece of me missing when you're not there
A ghost that walks beside me'

That tour was the first time I'd spent significant time away from my partner (now wife) since we'd got together and I felt a hole within me that I couldn't explain. 

When it came to writing songs for my new album, I expanded upon that idea. 

'Incomplete' is about a sense of something being absent or missing from our lives, whatever that may be, that leaves us feeling lost and less than whole. 

'No Cages' will be available on CD, and to download and stream from 4th July 2025.

101 Excuses

This is the final release from my 'No Cages' project and I'd like to share it with you all for free. Hopefully together we can spread a little love and joy. 

This is a song about the simplicity and power of a smile and how if we could all just smile at one another more often, whether stranger or friend, the world might be a little better place.

Gavin Chappell-Bates is a vegan indie-alternative-pop-rocker from Cambridgeshire, England. His music has featured on BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio 2. He released his debut album ‘We Are The Ones’ in 2016, on R*E*P*E*A*T Records, followed up by his second album 'The Last One' in 2018. 

Gavin also co-founded Peace On Your Plate, a vegan musical collective, who made it to number 40 in the UK downloads chart in Xmas 2019 with a song of the same name. The collective followed this up with a full album ‘The Forest Garden’. He was also part of an electro-grunge duo, Star Pixel, who released the album ‘Hadron Kaleidoscope’ in 2022.
