Hailing from Montreal, Poirier is a producer who doesn't sit still for long. From his frenetic soca and hyped up dancehall styles to the rootsy reggae and often filmic sounds, during his 15+ year career he has covered a lot of bases. Previous releases on Ninja Tune and Mixpak have seen a wide array of fans come flocking.
Constantly evolving and shifting, "Migration" is an album that draws all of it together, moving from inspirations and genres, pulling them apart and putting them together again, fluidly building a sound all of his own and planting a flag in the musical map. Electronics meld with acoustic instrumentation, warm tropical sounds rub up against stark digital soundscapes, disparate sounds and styles flowing easily into each other with no boundaries. It is indeed no coincidence that the album is called "Migration" - a key issue at the moment, no matter what continent you're on.

As with any Poirier album, the guests make up as much of the sonic tapestry as anything else. We find legendary NYC dancehall chatter Red Fox make an appearance on the lively single "Jump" (supported hugely by David Rodigan and Toddla T). Versatile producer Machinedrum team up with Poirier with a deep electronic post-dancehall tune. Long-time collaborator Face-T turns up on "Positive Up"- a dubby dancehall rhythm and later on the 'future dancehall' stylings of earlier single "Why"and also "Likkle Money". Similarly, previous collaborator MC Zulu steps up once again to give his unmistakeable energy to "Keep It Rolling" and "Universal Peace" and Haitian vocalist Fwonte supplying the summer vibes on the konpa meets rocksteady styled "Pale Mal". To complete the line-up like minded musicians Dubmatix and Riddim Wise bring their flavours to the table, providing a truly international line up.

In Poirier's own words:

"Corporations and governments often push individuals and communities over the edge with violent laws, untenable measures and continuous conflict. These entities restrict our movements and liberties to establish a type of chaos suitable for exploitation. It's time to break that stranglehold and to bring a new unity that is not motivated by making profit, but motivated by caring about people. 

The title of this album stems from the reality of Migration—an issue that can't and shouldn’t be avoided in 2016. To be fair, migration has been a major issue for centuries and millennia. The world is constantly reconfiguring, people are moving from one place to another, always seeking for something better. Things change, times moves forward and music is a meeting point, a dialogue.

Ideas and music moves with people. Nothing is static. Through music, we can still hear the traces of what happened a few decades, centuries and millenniums ago. This album is made of many collaborations and each one has a different story, a different path, all seeking for a better place to live and share."

Without a doubt one of the most iconic and legendary reggae labels to come out of the UK, Fashion Records has a rich and deep history that reaches far beyond the world of reggae. The brainchild of John MacGillivray and Chris Lane, two music devotees who manned a market stall in Clapham Junction selling imported reggae and ska vinyl during the late 70s (which later went on to become the hugely popular Dub Vendor shop), the label was set up in 1980 and started generating hits instantly, regularly topping the UK reggae charts and attracting attention further afield. Soon a recording studio was built, which served as a drop-in for most of the Jamaican stars passing through London at the time. Horace Andy, Johnnie Clarke, Alton Ellis, Frankie Paul, Junior Delgado and many more household names all spent time in the A-Class studios during the early days, although it was the stars of the new UK reggae explosion that really put the label on the map. Alongside artists such as Dee Sharp, Keith Douglas, Papa Face & Bionic Rhona, the label was a springboard for artist such as Asher Senator, Macka B, Andrew Paul and Smiley Culture, the latter whom scored a top 20 hit and a couple of appearances on Top Of The Pops with his 1984 single "Police Officer". 

Going from strength to strength, it was the chart explosion of dancehall in the early 90s that saw more international names come flocking to the label and more hits racking up - far too many to list here, but a brief glance through the discography shows Cutty Ranks, Papa San, General Levy, Top Cat, Tenor Fly, Daddy Freddy and Wayne Wonder all recording sides for the label. With the subsequent lull of mainstream dancehall hits, it wasn't until another more uniquely English style of dance music came around that the label was rediscovered; jungle. Based around the soundsystem style of Jamaican music, with an emphasis on the cutting drums and heavy basslines, young jungle producers used many of the tracks recorded and played by the previous generation as its backbone, the vocals given new life by the rudimentary samplers being used in bedroom studios all over the land. 

Fast forward 25 years and those reverberations are still being felt today - drum & bass, dubstep, hip hop, trap and almost any other sub-genre of what many now refer to as "bass music" has the DNA of reggae and dancehall running through it, so its only right to expect a little payback at some point. A&R'd by music fanatic and owner of the NICE UP! record label, Jon Sheppard - "Inna NICE UP! Fashion" aims to bring new life to some of these legendary tracks by having modern day producers rework them in their own style and re-introducing them to a new audience. From the frantic breakbeats of rave-revivalist Special Request and the bottom end sonics of Radio 1's Toddla T & Melé, to the modern minimalist dancehall-tech of Machinedrum and the digital dub drone of The Bug, there is plenty to get excited about here. Poland's Radikal Guru serves up some classic dubstep, Germany's Jahtari crew take it back into 80s nostalgia with their 8-bit dancehall style, whilst modern reggae producers Wrongtom, Jstar and Mr Benn all show why they are on the forefront of the UK reggae revival. The tempo gets upped for some heavier jungle inspired remixes from Aries & Gold Dubs, Serial Killaz and festival favourites Dub Pistols, hopefully giving a little bit of something for everybody.
