Dennis Cruz delivers the landmark 300th release on Damian Lazarus’ iconic Crosstown Rebels imprint with ‘The Snake Charmer’ EP, featuring collaborations with Ian Ludvig and the label boss himself.

An artist at the height of his powers, arriving off the back of his busiest Ibiza season to date, it’s safe to say that Dennis Cruz is a man in extremely high demand within the global electronic landscape. Founder of his own labels MÜSE and CRZ, while featuring as a key member of the Solid Grooves Family, Cruz’s longstanding ties to Crosstown Rebels date back to his debut in 2018, featuring as a regular on the label and at their extensive global events from fabric London to Miami’s renowned Get Lost extravaganza since. Returning to the imprint following his excellent album ‘Roots’ in 2021, plus his recent contribution to the 20th Anniversary compilation with his remix of Pier Bucci’s ‘Hay Consuelo’, Cruz is back in emphatic fashion as he marks the 300th release in the label’s revered catalogue with his latest EP ‘The Snake Charmer’ - featuring two solo tracks alongside collaborations with fellow Crosstown signee Ian Ludvig and label founder Damian Lazarus himself.

A master of crafting rolling arrangements with subtle nuances that keep dancefloors locked in unison, the four tracks across the package see Cruz experiment even further as he showcases a global array of influences. Opening track ‘Snake Charmer’ welcomes a crisp organic percussion arrangement accented by eastern flutes through to snaking grooves and hooky female vocal samples throughout, while ‘Revolution’ welcomes an all-star cast as he links with Damian Lazarus for a heady, skippy slice of house merging hazy chords and bright stabs with vocals from contemporary Detroit nightlife icon and staple DJ Holographic.

On the flip, the Spaniard once again steps out solo and dives deep into a low-slung and playful groove on ‘Time Out’, introducing a wealth of vibrant vocals amongst blossoming melodies and soulful organ riffs, before closing the show as he joins Ian Ludvig to present an off-kilter, impactful and warping closer guided by provocative vocal snippets across ‘Pain Away’.

Since its debut in 2017, Damian Lazarus’ annual ‘SPIRITS’ series on Crosstown Rebels has been a beacon for breakthrough artists, setting the label’s agenda for the year ahead. The sixth instalment in February is another meticulously curated lineup with ‘SPIRITS VI’ featuring a blend of new and recognisable talents, including Lauren Lane, Cristina Lazic, Iñigo Vontier, AJ Christou and many more.

London-based talent Cameron Jack kicks off what looks set to be a breakout year with ‘The Vision’, a bubbly and tropical cut with cosmic synths and loose, jumbled rhythms. Chris Bowl then brings his emotional style to the deep, rolling beats and fresh melodies of ‘Silent Plain’, while NY-born, LA-based house tastemaker Lauren Lane layers in smoky pads and tender whispers to her sublime deep house cut, ‘Fair Game.’ Next, German talent and Degree Records head Marc Lenz brings darker vibes to his track ‘People Are People’, while Rebellion artist Cristina Lazic and previous Lazarus collaborator Leia Contois combine for the alluring vocal soul and gritty minimal drums of ‘So Deep’.

Mexican Iñigo Vontier is a pioneer in his homeland after crafting a global reputation, and his twisted synths, shiny textures and steely drums on ‘That Trippy Sound’ prove why as they work you into a trance. Next is influential Manchester-based DJ/producer AJ Christou, who has released on the likes of Hot Creations and Cuttin’ Headz. His track ‘Back & Forth’ brings an infectious groove with plenty of flair and catchy drum funk, before TMPLE shuts things down with the deft, airy grooves and floating bass of ‘The Girl In The Room’, complete with its tender male vocals.

At the forefront of electronic innovation, Crosstown Rebels stands as a pivotal platform and record label, reflecting the genre’s diversity and housing an impressive roster that includes renowned artists and household names like Art Department, Maceo Plex, and Jamie Jones. With sub-labels Rebellion and Secret Teachings in tow, the imprint consistently and continuously expands its musical canvas, creating an immersive landscape for leading and emerging talents to thrive.

"With a bold flex of their increasingly supple A&R muscle - here we see NYC's prodigal sons, and chief-scene servers - fire up the every-fan seater, Nervous learjet; for an exclusive musical jolly to the ever-evergreen shores of Ibiza.



And stepping up to the soundtrack plate - box-fresh and powder dry, in their maiden outing for the label - is one, Bora Uzer. A new name to many eyes and ears no doubt; but, to have been entrusted by such a discerning stable, to handle one of their flagship, Ibiza facing, Summer releases - leaves little doubt as to how talented and safe a pair of club-primed hands we’re talking here.



First up, we have - ˙Magic Kind˙ - a track that manages to be many things all-at-once, without the fussiness, pretensions or persona issues that often come in tow. It terms of club dynamics - it packs a brand, simply pitch-perfect and made-to-measure for the hallowed terraces of Ibiza; whilst the tone, approach and melodic character harnessed - manage perfectly to encapsulate, in one tight 6 minute morsel - that rare and singular kind of magic, only ever truly felt on a white-isle dance-floor. At its core is a steadfast and thickset rhythm section; through which an expansive, undulating bass-line flows freely throughout; whilst - adding that beatific, Balearic sparkle above - is an instrumental menagerie of free-roaming strings, wind and percussion.



Snapping at its heels on the flip meanwhile, is ˙Street Love˙; a track full of verve, that’s doused in that same lush, enveloping warmth, that much of classic era Detroitian House, so readily pedalled. With its bounding bass-line; stout, compact beats and rousing 808 snare rolls - it’s a far more heads-down and urgent affair than its sibling.



However, the gratifying technical glue binding both cuts together here, is firstly in the crisp staccato stabs that pepper each stave with a refreshing 'live-cut' looseness, and ad-hoc regularity; and secondly - via a loving hand - the way in which many of the sounds have been washed, ever so gently with delicate reverb and gating.



Aspects which, overall, only serve to further crystallise that air of sun-shocked, blue sky-cloaked romance… leaving you gagging to hear both numbers, in their rightful, Mediterranean club-setting this Summer, at the next given opportunity.”

Gawdat is a duo that turns venues upside down - a name associated with unrestrained, feelgood vibes and a live performance unmatched on a regional level. The Cairo-based duo are heavily influenced by 90’s R&B culture, classic soul, and jazzy basslines, which form the basis of their signature sound and groove-laden mixing style.
 
Having infiltrated the scene across the country early on, the duo is considered one of Egypt’s elite imprints, having played nearly every major event within the borders since 2013. The brothers proved to be a unique embodiment of equal parts energy and technical capability. This led them to being called upon for international performances since 2015, a pivotal point in their young careers.
 
Gawdat have played alongside some of the industry’s heavyweights such as Jamie Jones, Marco Carola, The Martinez Brothers, Luciano, Loco Dice and Bedouin to name a few.
 
2024 has certainly been a career-affirming year that has seen them perform at esteemed festivals including Burning Man, Sunwaves, Paradise w/Jamie Jones, a sold out show in New York, two sold out London shows, as well as sets on lineups with DJ Tennis, Carlita, The Martinez Brothers, Seth Troxler and many more.
 
On the production front, they launched their record label called "DancIN' Music Records" that has been making waves locally and regionally. they released 5 tracks that are new unique music as they continue to amplify their profile on a global scale. Off the back of their best year yet, It’s fair to say Gawdat are just getting started…
