My first foray into building a drum kit out of custom samples of items around the house, along with a pad texture made from the cool-down sounds of a convection oven. The rest of the tones are all standard instruments in Ableton. After assembling the kit and making the primary rhythms, I picked the Bhairav scale to work with which informed all of the melodic decisions.

Rule You - Driven Mix

This is a piece composed using the twelve-tone system with note lengths (mostly) determined by a random number generator. Assembled in Ableton Live.

Ice Bones

This is a piece in the style of the many piano exercises I grew up playing. It was composed in MuseScore and the audio you hear is the midi output from that program. I then processed it in Ableton using the Arturia Mello-Fi tape emulation plug-in. To capture the autumnal vibe, I recorded myself shuffling through a pile of fallen leaves in the park.

The Bright Half Of Autumn

The two melodic sequences were created by numbering all the edges of a dodecahedron. The green numbers make up the bass line; the pink numbers are the melody that comes in later. The 5/4 time signature reflects the pentagons that make up the faces of the dodecahedron. The scale Messiaen 5 was utilized to reflect this element as well. Using the Messiaen 5 scale pushed the notes out of range of the initial instrument I selected so I went with a bi-timbral approach. The more organic tone captures the lower notes and the synth voice grabs the higher ones. The bass line felt a little lackluster on its own but adding the AutoFilter and adjusting it on the fly created movement and dynamic in an otherwise non-dynamic part of the song. Five sounds recorded around the house, edited and effected in Ableton. Sound sources are two different clocks, a shower curtain, squeaky floorboards, and the fan of my aging PS4. Stereo content available for those who use headphones. Thanks to the Synth Portland FB group for inspiration.
