A Northern song inspired by another Hank Snow tune, "I've Been Everywhere."  Iqaluit's Jerry Cans take us on a lap of Nunavut, from community to community, and then Ottawa's Rideau Centre. "You always see Nunavummiut there," says lead singer and guitarist Andrew Morrison.

Translated as “I Don’t Mind” the song’s about being a band of mostly white folks singing Inuktitut. We often make mistakes, we sometimes speak kutaq, but we love learning and learning to love in Inuktitut.  We are proud to learn, proud to make mistakes and be corrected, and we think it is sweet when young people are proud to sing along with Inuktitut music! Alianait! (We also think it is cool when other qallunaat make an effort to learn Aboriginal languages, thats pretty alright)

Songhoy Blues have announced details of the release of their debut album, Music In Exile, which is released on Transgressive Records on Monday 23rd February 2015.

The tracklisting of the Nick Zinner / Marc-Antoine Moreau produced album is as follows:

The album will be preceded by the release of a single Al Hassidi Terei / Mali on Monday 8th December 2014. The single will be available on 7” and digitally.

Once one of the most prominent and powerful of Mali’s many ethnic groups, the Songhoy, who hail from the banks of the Niger River between the ancient cities of Timbuktu and Gao, have suffered a long slow decline since their apogee in the 6th and 17th centuries. Now largely living on the margins of the West African nation whose political and cultural life is dominated by the Bambara people of the south, they nonetheless retain a fierce pride in their history, beliefs and music.


Songhoy Blues - Al Hassidi Terei

We're premiereing the excellent Red Snapper remix of Mali's Songhoy Blues new single; Irganda on Transgressive Records.

Hailing from the town of Gao in north-eastern Mali, Songhoy Blues came together in Bamako naming themselves in celebration of their displaced Songhoy people and culture.  A fixture on the Bamako club and bar live music treadmill, their break came in September 2013 when French music manager Marc-Antoine Moreau was in the city to scout for musical talent on behalf of Africa Express.  The band were invited to record a song with Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the track, Soubour, ended up as a stand-out track on the Africa Express album, Maison des Jeunes. 

Having already supported Damon Albarn at the Royal Albert Hall and played a short run of European dates with Julian Casablancas & The Voidz before Christmas, they recently announced details of their first UK tour.  Their show at Oslo in Hackney has already sold out and they've just put another London date show on sale in May at the Village Underground.

Red Snapper on remix duties are back producing some of their most vital and on point music for over a decade. This continues in their signature drum heavy style, slowing the original track down somewhat whilst retaining the ebb and flow of it.
