Gealdýr’s ﬁrst album “Sól’’ tells about the creation of this world, the end of it and the rebirth. The ongoing cycle of life. Nowadays most people think that life is very linear, but when we look into Norse mythology we can ﬁnd that even after Ragnarök (The fate of the Gods) life will continue. The old sun will die and a new one will be born. The old Gods die and after that the world is ready for a new cycle to start.

Sól

Vígríðr, meaning ‘battle-surge’, is a large field foretold to host the battle of the Gods as part of the events of Ragnarök. The album explores the sagas which dive deep into the last events of Ragnarök. 

Most of the songs on the album are in Old Norse, apart from Wulf Ond Eadwacer and Middangaerd, which are in Old English. These are Gealdýr’s first renditions of Old English literature.

Váli (Draumr Version) is a special remake of the song Váli from the Vígríðr album. The Draumr Version, with ‘Draumr’ meaning ‘dream’, is created to guide you to a relaxed state of mind and being. The deep frequency allows you to fall into a deep sleep, to relax, meditate and let go.

This is the first song from Gealdýr and it's based on the rune Othala. The meaning of the rune Othala is literally homeland or ancestral spiritual power. Othala is created to give you an ambient atmosphere where you feel the connection with nature and even perhaps your ancestral roots.

Ragnarök is an original song inspired by the Poetic Edda. It's telling the story about the end of life, but also about a new beginning. In the Old Norse way of thinking people have always seen life as a moving cycle. Something has to die to be reborn again.

The first song of the EP is based on the Hymiskviða in the Poetic Edda. It’s a song about the famous story of the God Thor and the giant Hymir who went on a fishing trip and came across the Midgard Serpent Jörmungandr.

Loki

The Valkyrjur (Meaning Valkyries in Old Norse) where female figures who choose who may die in battle and who may live. The Valkyries bring the chosen to the afterlife. One half of the chosen goes to Valhalla where the God Odin feasts with his warriors till Ragnarök and the other half goes to the Goddess Freya in Fólkvangr.

Valkyrjur

The song “Kauna’’ is based on the 6th rune of the Elder Futhark. Kauna, Kaunan, Kaun or Kenaz stands for the K sound. This rune can have multiple meanings. Kaun in Old Norse means wound or ulcer. It is also known as Kenaz (meaning torch) based on its Anglo-Saxon name. The deeper meaning of this rune symbolises warmth, enlightening and knowledge. Associated with ritual fires when celebrating the winter and summer solstice. Kauna, the great purifier, the torch and the wildfire, burns away the decay in the heart. The ulcer burns the body in sickness and Fire cleanses the soul, and lights the way.

‘’Myrkviðr’’ meaning dark wood or black forest in Old Norse. Is based on the Völundarkviða poem from the Poetic Edda. 

J.R.R. Tolkien said the following about ‘’Myrkviðr’’

Mirkwood (Myrkviðr) is not an invention of mine, but a very ancient name, weighted with legendary associations. It was probably the Primitive Germanic name for the great mountainous forest regions that anciently formed a barrier to the south of the lands of Germanic expansion.

The song ‘’Ginnungagap’’ tells the story of the creation of all living matter. Before the beginning there was only a big yawning void called Ginnungagap. In the northern part of Ginnungagap lays the cold Nilfheim and in the south the heat of Muspelheim. The process of life began when Nilfheim and Muspelheim met in the middle of Ginnungagap.

Ginnungagap

Bana is a collaboration between Danheim and Gealdýr.

The lyrics comes from hávamál stanza 15 and 16. 
In Old Norse means Revenge. 

A Viking song about continuing and exploring life with a brave heart, 
just as we imagine our folk and kin did back in the Viking age.

While facing hardships in his own life, Jonathan Barendsma (Gealdýr) began to understand the healing power that music can have on the soul. Barendsma, was keen to share his story through music. Inspired by the Poetic Eddas and determined to bring the Old Norse wisdom back to life. The name Gealdýr was inspired by Barendsma’s sighting of a white deer in a turbulent phase of his life; it is a combination of the Gaelic word ‘geal’ (white) and the Old Norse word ‘dýr’ (deer).
