This is a radio edit taken from the studio production of Brand New Ancients, the poet Kate Tempest’s acclaimed stage show that toured to sold out venues in the UK and New York. Brand New Ancients captures her unique blend of street poetry, rap and storytelling and is the tale of two families and their intertwining lives, set against the background of the city and braided with classical myth. Kate Tempest shows how the old myths still live on in our everyday acts of violence, bravery, sacrifice and love – and that our lives make tales no less dramatic and powerful than those of the old gods. Kate Tempest is one of the most exciting and innovative performers to have emerged in spoken- word poetry in many years: this dramatic poem won the prestigious Ted Hughes Prize for innovation in poetry and the Herald Angel at Edinburgh Fringe.

These are some of the questions posed by Andrew O'Hagan's fifth novel, The Illuminations, a story of love, memory and war. In collaboration with Faber Social, we present an evening of readings, music and performance. Andrew O'Hagan shares the stage with novelist, poet and playwright Edna O'Brien, whom Philip Roth has described as 'the most gifted woman now writing in English'; and performance poet Kate Tempest, winner of the Ted Hughes Award, and shortlisted for the 2014 Mercury Music Prize. With music from James Yorkston.

Founded in 2009, Gearbox is a vinyl-led record label, mastering and vinyl-cutting studio and turntable manufacturer situated in London and Tokyo. What started out as a focus on previously-unreleased archival jazz recordings,  (including Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, and Yusef Lateef), has now branched into contemporary jazz, electronic music, and folk. 

Output includes London jazz duo Binker and Moses, Indian percussionist and tabla-player Sarathy Korwar, tubist Theon Cross, and American jazz and funk five-piece Butcher Brown.
