The names Gravy, Jon Gravy.

Shaken, not stirred, and always sounding best when liberally splashed upside the ravey, Gravy has enjoyed an astronomical rise over the last few years on labels such as theBasement Discos, Step Back Trax and his own Gravy Trax. Fresh from his debut album release 'X To Love', the South African-rooted/Vienna-raised artist makes his debut on Pets with 'Motion 7'.

Bounding across some of the sturdiest pillars in this music, across four tracks Gravy lays down a history lesson of supreme groove proportions. 'Relief' sets the euphoric tone with its emotional bicep-flexing chords, springy breaks and that essential floating-in-space sensation synonymous with the early 90s. It rolls deep in the best company: 'Motion 7' pays homage to house music's sexiest quarters with a strong Chicago jack and a velvet French filtered touch while 'Forever' touches down in Detroit with its iced out synth strings and a relentless bassline.

Finally we're pushed over the edge by 'Pushin'. A bubbling slab of disco house with all the right vocals and orchestration, it's an emotional end-of-night moment-in-waiting. Push the boat out and spread liberally - Gravy is every bit as tasty as his name suggests

Back with more Underground Bullshit! Ovum are more than proud to welcome the return of the might Gel Abril.

Gel’s production career exploded with Ovum almost 10 years ago with the iconic aforementioned ‘Underground Bullshit’ EP. Since then he’s established relationships with some of Ovum’s most respected, progressive contemporaries – Defected, Mobilee, Get Physical, Be As One – but now the Israeli craftsman is back at his spiritual home with three of his biggest tracks in recent times. Get to know: 

Lean, stark, iced-out; ‘Raver’ was tailored for Ovum. Every element plays a key role; from the oak-trunk kicks to the bellowing subs to the demonic downpitched spoken sermon by way of the life-support machine rhythmic texture... Everything comprised to create a subtle, restrained but wholly dark tech groove that refuses to quit. 

With a refreshing sense of contrast, ‘Optical’ slaps hard from the off as a plucked riff springs from out of nowhere. A true drama-raiser that fluctuates back and forth, causing every other element from the kicks right the way up to the percussion to follow its tense pattern. Drop this and watch the panic unfold before your very eyes. 

Finally we hit ‘Akasa’. Tapping into the EP’s heritage theme with its timeless, almost bouncy acid line, Gel establishes a tangible sensation of physical funk with increasing percussive elements and a synth lick that gets decidedly trippy and unpredictable. The type of track that takes you to destinations without you even knowing you wanted to go there, it’s a fitting ending to an EP that’s been long overdue…

Why do we tell stories?

We breathe, we eat, we sleep. We seek connection. These are our basic human needs.

But there is one more need we all share, and it centres on stories. All across the world, stories are being recounted everywhere, in every imaginable way, at any given time. For telling stories is at the very essence of what it is to be human.

The universe of stories can be broken down into seven basic plots which underlie all stories ever told. Recognising these patterns is the gateway to unravelling the universal symbolic language from which all storytelling is spun.

With The Quest, Chapter 24 returns with seven stories in sound collected from artists across the world to bring these themes to life. 

NHAR (My Favorite Robot, Correspondant) is a consummate storyteller, and he opens the book with the glistening space tech of 'Navigli'. This is quickly followed up by newcomer Dan Grassler, whose superb 'Going Back' with US vocalist KnowKontrol is powerfully brooding and promises great things for the Munich-based producer.

The momentum picks up further with the standout 'Over My Head', a dark and delicious cut from two returning Chapter 24 artists, Alex Zed and Billie Fountain.

The label welcomes Teho and Machino for their inaugural releases on the imprint. Frenchman Teho (Herzblut, Parquet) serves up a double helping of delight with the skilfully crafted 'Back To The Forest' and the tense tech house of 'Drunken Leads'. Meanwhile, Machino (Desert Hearts), one of a new wave of Tijuana-based producers, showcases his unique blend of potent techno and ambient influences on 'Perdidos'.

Finally, Melodule and Van Did bring the tales to a close with 'Téou 12', a dreamy, abstract piece that showcases wonky basslines, drifting pads and engaging sound design.

They say that there are only seven basic plots but a thousand different stories. 

And so, as the storyteller utters that age old, magical phrase "Once upon a time...", let yourself be carried away…
