Michelle Owen has quietly carved out a life in and around electronic music for over 10 years (I think). It’s a career that has shimmied its way through every corner of the industry and indeed the lifestyle that is so quintessentially part of the music industry package. Over the years she’s started her own label, worked for other labels, she’s blogged about it, she’s blagged it, she’s produced it, she’s mixed it and she’s more often played it. She’s always been a busy little thing. And all along, she has remained one of the sweetest woman in music you would ever want to meet. 

Having recently returned to Sydney after many years in Berlin, she’s been kind enough to put together a mix inspired by the imminent summer months that have inevitably lured her back home. Pull up a banana lounge, grab a pimms & lemonade, sit back and enjoy the sunshine.

Finally, after a well earned xmas hiatus, Messina Music is back with a new and exclusive mix from a true gentleman of the music world. This one's from that man about town and all round nice guy - Mo'Funk. A little bit of funk, a dash of R&B and just a sprinkle of mushroom-jazzy-downbeat sweetness, this is killer. 

Sydney-bred DJ Mo’funk isn’t just a veteran of the Australian dance music scene, but now an annual fixture on the biggest clubbing playground of them all – the Spanish party isle of Ibiza. Since first venturing there with his record crate as a virtual unknown in 2007, Mo’s racked up sets at too many of the island’s hotspots to name. His 2012 tour of duty saw him hold down residencies at Pacha, Ocean Beach Club, and the legendary Space, where he regularly stepped up to the plate for their We Love… and Carl Cox club nights. 

He's back for the Sydney summer and felt it only right that he lay down a mix for our music lovin' gelatoheads!

MM05 - Mo'funk & Sergio Selim - Ice Cream Dreams (The Messina Mixtape)

There’s been a lot of talk recently regarding the lost art of DJ’ing. I’m sad to say, we tend to agree.
DJ’s carry entire record collections around on a USB (as low res MP3’s to boot), they have software that does the beat-matching for them, they tweak and twist imaginary knobs as they prance around like show ponies, and it seems standard promo shots are best done in a bikini these days. Luckily, there are still good folk like Jamie Palmer who must rely entirely on their well honed skills as a fussy selector, because quite frankly, he looks appalling in a bikini.

Jamie’s never really been a career DJ, but he’s what we call a proper DJ. He buys vinyl, selects them in a manner akin to panning for gold, he mixes them on turntables and thankfully every now and then, he records the result.He buys tunes that you'll want to listen to time and time again. Records that get better with age, rather than fatigue with every revolution of the player. It's music that has longevity, music thats beautiful and music that makes your tummy churn with nervous excitement.

Mixed almost entirely off 'vinyl only' releases and meticulously manicured with love, its an understatement to say we are super chuffed to be putting this exclusive mix up for you all to enjoy. 

It took about 4 months to compile, 2 months to mix and about 3 months for me to post it online. Standard gestational period for a fully formed auditory baby of this quality!

We call it deep house music. He calls it dancing music. We tend to agree.

Social Criticism in Lauryn Hill's 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'
Lauryn Hill's song 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is an empowerment anthem and a sharp social critique, released in 1998 as part of her acclaimed album 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'. The song addresses themes of self-respect, sexuality and the dangers of being carried away by appearances and materialism.
In the first verse, Hill speaks directly to women, warning them about the dangers of allowing themselves to be used by men who are only interested in 'that thing'. She criticizes the idea that women must conform to standards of beauty and behavior in order to be accepted or loved, mentioning 'hair weaves like Europeans' and 'fake nails done by Koreans' as examples of how women are pressured to conform to external standards. The artist also references religious and historical figures, such as Jezebel, to illustrate the consequences of straying from one's own principles and values.
The second verse is directed at men, criticizing those who prioritize material possessions and status over their responsibilities and relationships. Hill calls out toxic behaviors such as domestic violence and irresponsible fatherhood, and questions how these men can hope to succeed in life if they are not right on the inside. The song ends with a dialogue that reflects on the difference between love and being in love, suggesting that true love goes beyond the surface and accepts a person as they are. 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' is a powerful reminder that self-respect and integrity are key, and that we should be aware of the pitfalls of materialism and objectification in interpersonal relationships.

Every time I walked into Messina to grab my favourite gelato and I couldn’t help but notice the music. To me it was as sweet as the frozen bliss. After a few months of visits I ended up asking the staff where the sounds were from and that led me to the Messina mixes – discovering hours of the type of house I loved and still love.
 
The last time I was in there my girlfriend had to pull me out of the store because I wanted to stay there just to hear the next song. ‘You should see if they would play one of your mixes?’ she said. What a great idea and what a great girlfriend! So I headed home to my records and mixed a selection of house tunes I hope people will enjoy as much as I enjoyed curating. I sent it to Declan with fingers crossed and the rest is history.
 
Deep and funky blended with soulful and edgy - it’s an extended house ride so choose your flavours, tune in and enjoy my Messina mix. I can’t wait to go in there and hear it!
