During his 25 year career he released more than a dozen albums, had two songs in the top 50 of the Billboard mainstream rock charts and received two Independent Music Awards. Whitley's sound was drawn from the traditions of blues, jazz and rock and he recorded songs by artists from many genres. He died in 2005 of lung cancer at the age of 45.

From Wikipedia: "Punky Reggae Party" is a reggae song by Bob Marley & The Wailers, recorded and released in 1977. Not appearing on any studio album, it was released as the b-side to the Jamming single in some countries and was later released as a live single on Babylon By Bus. Subsequently, it appeared on a number of compilations and 'Best of' albums as well as the Deluxe Edition of Exodus and the 2002 CD Reissue of Legend.

The song was written by Bob Marley as a positive response to the release of a cover version of Junior Murvin's "Police and Thieves" by English punk band The Clash, on their first LP.[citation needed] Referring to the party of the title of the song, the lyrics mention several punk and reggae groups: "The Wailers will be there, The Damned, The Jam, The Clash – Maytals will be there, Dr. Feelgood too."

After being shut-down by security from rehearsing (without electricity) in my own hotel room... I took it outside. The ambient noise (cars, people, planes, doors, elevators, etc.) provides an amazingly warm & semi-dynamic sonic blanket to keep the song warm.
