I wanted to do something different for this night, so I experimented with a new approach to my preparation, organising playlists with tracks by what kind of sound design and moods they contain, and putting them within folders that indicated the general intensity in order to slowly ramp up the tension. This groundwork allowed me to prepare an arc for a deep set where I could make long layered mixes while maintaining the groove, speed and improvisation I consider to be recognizable features of when I DJ in a club.

Although this set also sustains a steady groove and flow, it is still a departure from my usual, more instinctive way of playing, where I tend to switch more impulsively between styles and themes, mixing tracks that have pronounced rhythmic elements with tracks that have very memorable basslines and hooks, especially from earlier decades, call it old school, 90s, 00s, retro or outdated if you want. I do this in order to keep a sense of playfulness and unpredictability going (fu n）with selections that have a distinct character.

This set was more about consistency, atmosphere and subtle transitions. The aim was to have the music slowly progress over the course of the set but without it becoming a static affair. This is why I completely avoid looping tracks, as I want their sounds to continuously evolve, and the phrasing in their structure to be continuously accentuated throughout the mix. 

It might not sound quite like what you would expect from a Comrade Winston DJ set, but I actually had a lot of fun constantly keeping two tracks in the mix while preparing for the third to take over, slowly stacking upon the current mood instead of rapidly switching between different ones. Prefering not to rely on the element of surprise but rather slowly reach a boiling point and to enjoy the ride.

Carmen Electro is a project by a Finnish DJ and producer. Her journey with electronic music started around ten years ago while living in London and discovering techno through artists like Dax J, Ben Klock and Dvs1. Chasing the eternal high and best parties in the world she later relocated to Berlin and eventually made her transition from the dancefloor to behind the decks. Her rave-leaning, techno & trance inspired selections are strongly influenced by both of the cities she grew up in, as well as clubs like Corsica Studios, and parties like Herrensauna. Excited to share her music with more dancers in the future, she recently made her first international debut in Dublin, and is set to put out her first release this year.

Born and raised in southern Italy, Jacom is an emerging techno DJ and producer based in Zurich. In 2006, he fully dedicated himself to electronic music, which quickly brought him behind the decks. When he moved to Zurich in 2012, his career took an exponential upswing. In 2016 the talented Italian became a member of the renowned label Adroit and has been an integral part of the collective ever since.

In addition to numerous performances in Italy (e.g. Amnesia Milano, Cosmic Festival) and throughout Switzerland, Jacom has also demonstrated his skills in other European countries. Thus, Berlin is also one of his achievements, where he played in well-known venues such as Anomalie, Aeden or About Blank. Jacom is characterized by his groovy and hypnotic sets, which is reflected in his productions. The latest EP "Mind" (with remixes by Kaiser and Vsk) hit immediately and received support from notable artists like Richie Hawtin, Joseph Capriati or Perc. Jacom still has a lot of big things in his pipeline, so be sure to keep an eye on him!
