Momentary Bliss is the album from Norwegian wonder boy, Third Attempt, who crafts a typically refined selection on the gorgeously eclectic and majestically constructed 'Momentary Bliss'. Continuing to light up the ever-reliable Beatservice roster, he combines an awe-inspiring production quality with an equally inspiring work rate, confirming his status as one of the Norwegian underground's most magnetic artists to have emerged over the last few years. True to his evolving-but-recognisable sound, his latest long-player seamlessly glides across musical textures, forging elements of lounge, ambient, disco, house, funk, hip hop and more into a brilliantly coherent collection.

The album opens with the evocative vocals of the 'Precious Day On Earth' before quickly raising the tempo with 'Soul, Body & Mind' that is pitched somewhere between glossy nu-disco and hazy trip-hop. 'Love Star' demonstrates his flair for sampling as he elegantly layers atmospheric vocal chops and dexterous musical refrains. 'Keep Your Head Up' sees hip-hop vocals and scratches over soothing keys, elegantly unfolding and adding mystique to the smokey groove. Dusty-fingered sample manipulation continues with 'Teach Me', where smoke drifts across waves of twinkling keys, while 'Turbo' continues the funk-flecked theme, with its crisp drums, driving mesmerising guitar licks, spacey synths and stirring chord progression.

'Secret' drifts into focus with luscious chords, hypnotic guitar riffs and robust bass. The disco energy of  'Our Show For The Night' subtly shifts the mood while honeyed vocal samples beautifully augment the captivating orchestration as the dynamic arrangement unfolds. On 'Keep Playin' keys dance across the panorama, while the chopped hip-hop vocal cuts through before synth bass adding weight to the groove. 'Hold Me' contains some gorgeously orchestrated instrumentation, feel-good guitar licks, and stirring strings. Finally, the rolling breaks and sumptuous strings of 'Hard Times (Part Of The Journey)' propels jazzy keys, hazy guitar licks and evocative vocal samples to see the album home in suitably engaging style.

Graced from the get-go, 'Blessed' kicks off with an inspirational snippet of speech and gritty drum loop, opening out into the beginnings of this lovestruck summertime heater. Morphing from hip-hop breakbeat into chunky deep house groove, the hypnotic bassline and muted guitar, give a jazz-tinged flavour to 'Blessed'. Third Attempt keeps that live feeling rolling throughout, layering chopped R&B vocals and shimmering keys to add to the ever-infectious vibe.

As well-equipped at soundtracking the hazy hues of a sunset, as it is powering a dancefloor at peak time, 'Blessed' is warmth and weight in equal measure, served up in signature Third Attempt style.

PREMIERE: Third Attempt - Blessed [Beatservice Records]

A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.
