'Stray-in-Place Song Cycle' Gene Pritsker & Erik T. Johnson

'Stray-in-Place Song Cycle' is an album of six eclectic songs by Gene Pritsker, based on the poetry of  Erik T. Johnson and inspired by the lockdown of 2021. Three of the songs are rock-influenced and the others have jazzier roots. All are performed by world-class musicians.

A variety of singers add their unique styles to six pieces, giving the recording an extra-eclectic flavor. They are: Stefanie Egger (Austria); Sophie Dunér (Sweden); Berzan Önen (Turkey); Yelena Dudochkin (USA); and Stefanie Schlesinger (Germany).

Everything on this album was recorded remotely during the height of the pandemic shutdown, including all of Gene Pritsker’s guitars (New York City); Clemens Rofner’s bass (Vienna), and the drums of Simon Springer (Austria); Francesco Coppola Bove (Italy); and Philipp Bernhardt (Germany).

Sound Liberation’s 9th studio album, ‘Better Now’, continues the bands eclectic musical exploration. Sound Liberation's musical philosophy, developed by band founder Gene Pritsker, is based upon "ending the segregation of sound vibration (i.e. musical Genres)". The group incorporates its philosophy by performing compositions that encompass a diverse range of musical genre, heavily influenced by hip-hop and rock rhythms. This enables one to hear elements from classical music to Jazz to music of various cultures at a Sound Liberation show.

On ‘Better Now’ Gene Pritsker’s compositions explore soul, hip-hop, modern jazz, cross over classical, blues, r&b, jazz fusion and more. Recorded over a period of two years in various locations and studios, some tracks recorded remotely some in a studio station. The album takes you on a no holds bar genre defying journey that is the defining style of Sound Liberation.

In “What Occurred In The Light, Goes On In The Dark” I was interested in writing counterpoint for the cello. The main melody gets treated as a fugue subject, without really becoming a full fledged fugue. The material of the last section is first hinted at in the first slow section laid between the cracks of counterpoint, it is then fully developed to the end when the first melody comes back to climax the work to its finish

Composer/guitarist Gene Pritsker and Composer/percussionist peter Jarvis team up for an album of new music for electric guitar and drum set. For this endeavor, besides writing their own compositions, the duo reached out to a few composers and requested some new music for this unusual combination. The result is an album of six compositions by Jarvis, Pritsker, David Saperstein, Joseph Pehrson, Jessica Wells and Daniel Palkowski. Daniel on synthesizers along with Dan Cooper on bass, join the duo to form a quartet with electronics in the Jessica Wells composition. The music on this recording forms a synergy between complex musical notation and passages of free improvisation.

Program note:
Galileo Starry Messenger is entirely based on a transcription of one of my guitar solos. I recorded a piece some years back called ‘Born Free’ which is a rock/fusion jam basically, but the guitar solo on that tune has haunted my head for a long time. I decided to transcribe it and create a composition on the material. Galileo Galilei wrote his treaties The Starry Messenger in 1610 using his newly invented "spyglass".  In it he described his observations of the sky. I am sure before he was able to amplify his sight of the heavens he stared at them for a long time with his naked eye, trying to see as much as he can, just as I walked around with the melodies from my solo swimming in my head but never really in my possession until I sat down and transcribed them note by note and wrote down what I did in the spur of the  moment. After the creation of his "spyglass" Galileo was able to sit down and ‘transcribe’ the sky onto paper in sketches and words, capturing it for posterity.

‘Operatic Electric’ consists of Juecheng Chen - countertenor, Gene Pritsker - Composer/ Di.J./Guitar. The duo performs Gene Pritsker’s compositions written for countertenor and electronics as well as re contextualizations of classic aria’s. Their debut self-titled album explores and re-imagines the music of John Dowland, Henry Purcell, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Claudio Monteverdi, as well as original compositions by Pritsker that push the boundaries of the countertenor's voice and how it can blend within various genres and styles.

Composer/guitarist/rapper/Di.J./producer Gene Pritsker has written over 900 compositions, including chamber operas, orchestral and chamber works, electro-acoustic music and songs for hip-hop and rock ensembles. All of his compositions employ an eclectic spectrum of styles and are influenced by his studies of various musical cultures.
	He is the founder and leader of Sound Liberation; an eclectic hip hop-chamber-jazz-rock-etc. ensemble and co-director of Composers' Concordance. Gene's music has been performed all over the world at various festivals and by many ensembles and performers, including the Absolute Ensemble, Adelaide Symphony, MDR Symphony, The Athens Camarata, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Brooklyn, Shanghai and Berlin Philharmonic, Sinfonietta Riga, Orchester des Pfalztheaters, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Anhaltische Philharmonie, ensembleKONTRASTE as well as such soloists as Anne Akiko Meyers, Lara St. John, Kathleen Supove, Sarah Chang, Martin Kuuskmann, Tim Fain, Borislav Strulev and Simone Dinnerstein. He has worked closely with Joe Zawinul and has orchestrated major Hollywood movies, Including 'Cloud Atlas', for which he wrote additional music and composed his ''Cloud Atlas Symphony’.
	The New York Times described him as "...audacious...multitalented." Joseph Pehrson, writing in The Music Connoisseur, described Pritsker as "dissolving the artificial boundaries between high brow, low brow, classical, popular musics and elevates the idea that if it's done well it is great music, regardless of the style or genre". Classical Music Sentinel writes:  "His expressive reach is so wide as to encompass everything from ethno/techno, rock/jazz fusion, classical opera and more, and it all seems to be effortlessly integrated within his anima and comes out through different facets of his persona. You could almost see him as a modern day renaissance man.” 
	Raul DaGma writes in his article ‘Gene Pritsker: Varieties Of Musical Experience’: "Gene Pritsker is a modernist at heart. If there is something new to be said to describe an old form or even a formless old thing – as old as yesterday, that is – this extraordinary musician will be among the first to say it…All of his music is of the highest quality, audacious and witty, joyous and elevated, and incomparable to anything written and recorded. In all of this Gene Pritsker has created a singular vocabulary, spoken not only by someone deeply schooled in music, but also in history, theology and philosophy."
