Emerging singer Salt Ashes, aka 22 year old Veiga Sanchez, announces her debut single Somebody, set for release 17th February 2014 via @NightBeachRecords. 

On Somebody, Salt Ashes brings to life the imaginings of Kate Bush dancing in a haunted Studio 54 to electronic pulsing grooves and lyrical escapism “Somebody take me… away”. Somebody is complemented by B-side Little Dove, a jewel of a track with fragmented, brooding vocals. The package is tied up with Cruelty’s soulful, slick italo-disco re-imagining of the original Somebody.

Obsessed with Giorgio Moroder’s blend of disco and epic dark atmospheres, Salt Ashes first sprang to attention with her cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘Black Celebration’. Salt Ashes has spent the past year honing her own songs in the studio, creating her signature electronic grooves, and drawing influence from artists as diverse as Madonna, Kate Bush, Daft Punk and MIA.

"Cross My Heart," the debut track from new ANTI- signing Son Little, is a box of bonbons filled with barbed wire.  Over a deceptively slinky groove -- shades of 70's Marvin Gaye, Leon Ware -- the singer croons, phrases emerging from the swelter, "sex and candy," "gonna get me some:" a lover's plea.  But the angular blues guitar lick over the top of the track is clue to a deeper, older invocation, as Son Little's lyrics bear witness to two departed friends, and, inspired by Trayvon Martin, offer a meditation on the ease with which black lives are erased -- even now, decades beyond the years when that smoky guitar line was invented. Son Little's voice soars like a young Stevie Wonder's as he testifies to his loss, and the "cross my heart" tag line reveals itself not as a lover's plea, but a defiant prayer to remember the lost.

The track is accompanied by an atmospheric black-and-white video that evokes the smoky milieus of Lester Young and Billie Holiday, reinforcing the themes of the song in its references to lost greats.

Finally, I can talk about this - my debut album Human is coming next year, March 10. This is the first single from it, Adrift, with my long running vocal collaborator Kathrin deBoer. I had a simple piano chord progression and a randomised percussion idea to give to Kathrin, who captured the feeling beautifully with her lyrics and jazz influenced vocal approach. It's more of a personal piece of music for me than a club track, which is the approach I've taken for the whole album.

December is written and lead by multi-instrumentalist, Jeff Smith. Thus, it marks a stylistic departure from the band’s orchestral origins, featuring a minimalistic overture that eases into a delicate piano riff in the minor key. 

Layered with ethereal female harmonies including singer/songwriter Milly Hirst, Jeff’s unaffected vocals cut deep into the marrow, sublime in their simplicity. December ascends through the angular drums of latest band member, Alex Mackenzie - whose trip-hop beat accents the trumpet / violin contrapuntal melodies into a maudlin, macabre Mariachi march.
