Catalyst (Radio Edit)

Steering clear of simplistic, surface-value interpretation, the track’s mechanical propulsion mirrors the repetitive quest of technological gratification. Vocalist Leona Farrugia’s noir-tinged vocal speaks of the everyday digestion of a barrage of information, whereby an individual is coerced into a constant act of self-measurement and comparison. 

The metaphorical act of ‘feeding’ on these outwardly projected displays of ego, subtly leads the track toward the grotesque, not too dissimilar from Hitchcock’s creeping, voyeuristic cameras. The track features backing vocals from John Newton from cult South London noise-rock duo JOHN. Leona hones in on the personal relevance of the themes:

“Naturally I’ve always felt like there’s a pressure to compare myself, be that through the lens of present technologies or within the creative industry. It’s something that can be very debilitating, especially to young people in a patriarchal society”

Speaking of the composition of the single, Leona commented, "I think Mackerel's Funky Mission is an escapism mechanism, you sort
of pretend to be someone else, in this case, a fish, to escape from a current situation. It's fun to pretend you're something else and
write from that perspective. It was also inspired by the lockdown as I wanted to be a fish just to be able to travel, and also by my love
for the sea. I tried to be as visual as possible with the lyrics and the story."

Formed on the island of Malta, Brighton-based / Anglo-Maltese outfit ĠENN is: Janelle Borg – guitars (she/her), Sofia Rosa Cooper – drums (she/they), Leona Farrugia – Vocals (she/they), and Leanne Zammit – bass (she/her). 

ĠENN is a self-described sisterhood founded on instinctive trust, their bold move to the UK mirrored by their 2023 debut album ‘unum’ (a Latin word for oneness and unity). The album gained particular praise from BBC 6Music & KEXP for its ambitious negotiation of the band’s diverse roots - with a track-list that journeys through experimental rock, post-punk and Mediterranean folk. The collaborative video for single ‘The Sister Of’ also achieving a UK Music Video Award nomination for its cinematography.
