On A Symbol For Disguise (GEN048), @ububoi & @rhunterrrr join hands to craft a high saturation, high density, high tension collection of collaborative tracks. Texturally, the sound is raspy, heavy hitting, synthetic yet constantly fluid, pushed or shaped into high harmonic regions, giving the sound a full, shimmering, metallic tint. The blasting, bouncy, crispy, sometimes even shredding percussive approach suggests an intense but elastic approach, manifesting in constantly morphing highly syncopated rhythmical forms. With detuned synthetic harp arpeggios, grimy, chromatic melodies and gnarly, glassy pads, the approach here is sometimes reminiscent of that lost era where home listening music, dance music and computer music formed an uncertain and temporary alliance. The notion of a confrontation is further underlined by the incidental appearance of a denatured voice in full range: whispering, declaring, demanding, wailing - looking the listener in the eye.

Oozing gentle optimism, ‘Visited by Strangers’ takes a different approach from earlier work. Where records like ‘Donde Hubo Fuego’ established a direct, hard-edged style, this one shifts emphasis to introspection. It’s also a product of the pandemic; the remote nature of its various collaborations speaking to an elusive sense of community and belonging. 

Complete with auto-tuned vocals courtesy of Catnapp, our premiere finds sublime tension in a cinematic arrangement of field recording and synth.

Premiere: Bungalovv - 'Last Video Call'

With Visited by Strangers, Pablo Betas returns to the melodic roots of his musical practice as Bungalovv. The release's introspective, even tender, sound marks a shift away from the aggression of his previous work, while retaining the cinematic flair and painterly texture that have become trademarks of the Argentinian musician's sound.

Composed during the pandemic, Visited by Strangers is nevertheless decidedly collegial, with four of its seven tracks being (remote) collaborations with other artists. Notably, it includes Bungalovv's first-ever tracks to feature guest vocalists, and the release is also strewn with field recordings sent from a friend who was under lockdown on an Argentinian peninsula.

These conditions mean that Visited by Strangers is charged with the tension between strangeness and familiarity, or intimacy and distance. As song titles such as "Sharing Spells" and "Last Videocall" suggest, the tracks here evoke a world where human connection is mediated in fragile and fleeting, yet beautiful, ways.
