Hai Thế Giới (Gentle Ohm remix) - excerpt

Gentle Ohm is one of Hanoi’s most fascinating musicians. He has built a reputation in the capital for his complicated compositions and home-made instruments. Gentle Ohm could easily be amongst the most electronic, adventurous and elaborate offerings to date.

His live shows are rare and to be savoured, so if you like manic electronic mash ups of irregular time signatures and samples of traditional Vietnamese music his irreverent work will appeal.

But is it ‘Gentle’? Of course not. What we encounter is an ominously cavernous blanket of noise, interwoven with hauntological samples from bygone eras of traditional Vietnamese music, dipped in modern industrial colours, then maniacally live-processed in between dub-like beats into elaborate streams of consciousness. The resulting maelstrom is a canopy of dappled light over and through the sound with which he works.

In the past he's worked in many styles, from hardcore improvised live sampling with jazz musicians to bolshy contemporary instrumental music saturated with electroacoustic sound. He's also worked with film, written music for contemporary dance, soundtracks and music for theatre.
