Die Rot Zeder aus der Familie der Zypressengewächse (Cypressaceae) wird vor allem in ihren Zuchtsorten im Garten kultiviert. Die Naturform spielt dagegen keine Rolle. Je nach Sorte und Wuchsform bildet J. virginiana einen kleinen bis mittelhohen Baum oder einen Großstrauch von 5 bis maximal 15m Höhe. Die Blütezeit fällt in die Monate April bis Mai. Die Früchte sind giftig. Die kugelförmigen Beerenzapfen sind zunächst grün gefärbt und werden mit zunehmender Reife blau.
