The Map You Make... performance 3

OCEAN was a site-specific performance event designed for Manchester's extraordinary Victoria Baths in collaboration with performers Gemma Bass & Gary Farr of the Vonnegut Collective.

Integrating sound, image, movement & physical materials, each performance led a small audience through the various spaces of the Baths, on a journey through different perspectives & times, exploring the human relationship with water - our histories as bathers, swimmers; our water dreams, our watery bodies...

The history & building of the Victoria Baths (Manchester's 'Water Palace') & the voices of those who used & use it played an intimate role in this adventure: spaces that have seen competitive swimming, leisure bathing, dancing, that have changed from gender-segregated to mixed, that have provided community spaces for washing & socialising, all informed and transformed the work to explore a myriad of oceans, both within & without.

OCEAN

Salt Soundings was a performative installation created for Cellar 4, Porthmeor Studios, St Ives. Accumulating as a process-based, durational work over a 2-week residency in Summer 2017 (10th - 20th July inclusive), Salt Soundings evolved from a 'making' process in the first week into a performative process in the second.

The installation aimed to explore our understanding of our status and role as artists within the history- and industry- rich spaces of St Ives. Born out of an awareness of the various overlapping and intertwining histories of the Porthmeor cellars and studios, and that we were sharing Cellar 4 with another artist's response to these elements (Mark Dion's The Maritime Artist), Salt Soundings examined our relationship to this space as outsiders, visitors and, to an extent, tourists.

As creative practitioners and 'artistic tourists', the process-orientated nature of the installation formed our approach to participating in and engaging with the various histories and industries of St Ives. Absorbing and responding to our surroundings holistically, the work invited public observation of our own creative interaction with the place and its bridging to our established artistic practices - a public demonstration of engagement and creation.

The work evolved over the fortnight through a cumulative collecting of sound, materials & objects from around St Ives, interwoven with an exploration of the history of the cellars. These materials were incorporated into the installation through a performative making process involving materials, sound & text, with further, more concentrated scheduled performances through the fortnight.

geode is the collaborative practice of Elizabeth Ditmanson and Gavin Osborn. Encompassing multimedia installations, mixed-media performance, sound art and more, geode's work seeks to explore and creatively engage with the world through multifarious artistic practice.  With a sharpening focus on site-specific projects across the UK, the living histories of spaces and their socialities are an increasingly integral element of our creative output.
