This piece was written while I was studying abroad in Amsterdam. It was driven by my experiences in the Anne Frank house, in an exhibit at the Stedelijk Museum that interviewed refugees with queer identities from various regions around the Middle East and Northern Africa, as well as visiting a former prison that had been refashioned into a refugee camp. Trying to grapple with the heaviness of these experiences, I was also grappling with my own identity and positionality while being abroad for the first time. Contemplating my sense of identity and how it changed being apart from what was familiar, I made it a point to find a guitar so that I could work through my thoughts through music. This song is the result of that: A song about being away from everything you know, holding the heaviness of hard histories, and embracing oblivion as you cast your fate to the wind.
