Blues Supremacy

For Tom Blackwell.  Tom was a very active funk drummer on the Portland ME scene in the 80s and 90s. I played with Tom for about ten years until 2017 or so. We had a lot of fun. Tom's ability to write music is unusual for a drummer. Tom's compositions were always well thought out, fun, and interesting. He usually sang his songs too. Tom was also a first in class sound engineer. I had hoped to spend time learning sound from Tom after I retire. Alas, I'll be using a Quija board to get tips now.

I'll keep plugging away at this piece. I have to say, it felt like Tom had input. Maybe I don't need a Quija Board after all.

A sacred musical good-bye to my father Rick Ives, who taught me much about jazz piano through direct instruction and by making sure my brothers and I were well aware of the great jazz pianists of his day and the American songbook of the 20th century.  Rick also gave me half of his precious piano lessons with with Leo Grimes during high school; the same thing his father did for him. We'd drive to Melrose every other Friday for my lessons with Leo. Which is also how I learned to drive so well. #Masshole
