Suck It Online is a podcast series dedicated to presenting a wide variety of vintage sounds within contemporary contexts while also working to uncover everyone’s favorite bird.

Suck It Online With All Your Friends

“Camp taste is a kind of love, love for human nature” - Susan Sontag (Notes on Camp, 1964)

A camp set is a contemporary take on classical sleaze featuring soft rock, disco, glam, and soul at an 80-105 BPM tempo, traditionally (although not always) bookended by a queer novelty record and an uptempo Fleetwood Mac song. Other hallmarks include poetic interludes and the use of spoken word during a song's breakdown. They are usually recorded outdoors, but must be recorded in the presence of plants when not.

It is a snapshot of a feeling; a perfectly imperfect document of a moment in time.

Morning Campers was recorded on a West Virginia mountaintop in 2016.
Morning Campers 2 was recorded next to a Pennsylvanian creek in 2017.
Morning Campers 3 was recorded on the roof of Club Pittsburgh in 2018. 
Morning Campers 4 was recorded at a Homotor City Homestead in 2020.

When playing sets like this, Geoffrey likes to utilize costume design strongly rooted in 70s/80s gay American iconography in order to summon the amyl spirits of clubs such as Trocadero Transfer and 12 West, which is to say that they DJ without a shirt. This is occasionally considered controversial for some reason.

Also, I think that's the year my parent's got AOL but that could just as easily have been 1996 or 1997.

After watching hours of YouTube videos from 1977, @adytoledano decided to be Iggy Pop this month, and we both think he did a terrific job of imitating that night-clubbing Muskegon twang. On this month's program, we learned about how English rock stars think light guys make great lovers, which planet's rings were discovered, and even made a few mistakes! The primary one being the ID of Rinder and Lewis' bathhouse jam Anger as their other bathhouse jam Lust. We'd regret the error if we had the time to care. 

As always, Time Machine is recorded live under the influence of mezcal at the @refugeworldwide studios on Weserstr. 168 in Berlin, Germany. Beginning next month, Time Machine will enter a fixed time slot, which is every second Wednesday from 3PM-5PM. We can't wait to lunch with you! See you in 1987 :)

For my second @nts_live show of the year I wanted to channel the gorgeous spring we have been having here in England. I played new Music by Yu Su, Carla Del Forno, Gladkazuka on Cómeme, Free Love (from their amazing new album Luxury Hits) Theus Mago on Optimo Music and Ghosts Of Dance on Dark Entries alongside some of my favourite recent finds and some old favourites. 

In the second hour of the show, I welcomed Regional Treasure™ @Geoffreylarue all the way from Hotmotor City on to the show to present a "selectioné of Italian Language Disco Pop". فناء (fana') lives in the Rust Belt and their favorite bird this week is the simurgh, a benevolent creature from Iranian mythology that, ok, fine, does sometimes eat people but represents the union between earth and sky too so it balances out. Legend states that the simurgh has seen the world die three times over and therefore has the knowledge of the ages. Also, her feathers have healing powers and she is rumored to be able to speak like a human, but if they spoke....what would they say? What would be her message?

فناء (fana')lives in the Rust Belt and their favorite bird this week is the Buraq, a mystical pegasus from Islamic tradition known for carrying querents up to the heavens in the middle of the night so that they may converse with the divine and achieve a better understanding of the cosmic mystery. At dawn, they are returned home not merely changed, but reborn. 

So fear not! Let her carry you into the stars on this bluest of moons once the clock strikes twelve but don’t forget: There is nothing more important (or more critical) than knowing when it is right to dare to speak of what your journey has willed upon you, and when it is best to keep silent. Those who fail to make that distinction often do so at their own risk.

Geoffrey LaRue is a visual artist and record collector whose interests include comic book aesthetics, homespun fashions, and Godzilla. 

They are also passionate about disco music. In their spare time, Geoffrey also studies stage design at Berlin's Universität der Künste and also co-hosts a wacky radio show called Time Machine, which airs on Refuge Worldwide because why not?
