Catherine is a Geography high school teacher and head of department who resides in Somerset, UK. Mum to Jack and Megan, and loves spending time with the family - hence her Twitter handle. Catherine chairs the Geographical Association's (GA) International Special Interest Group and has been lucky enough to write and present for the GA on many occasions. She also writes/presents for a range of other organisations including Oxford University Press, Hodder and Tutor2U.  Being part of the geography community is very important to Catherine - she loves how they collaborate on projects, share ideas and support each other.

Kit talks to Dr Jess Tipton (she/her) over a Whole Earth Chicory Coffee, chatting about grating beetroot, empowering young people with environmental activism, amongst other things.

Jess dabbled in life as a musician, Russianist, civil servant and teacher. After studying Russian and clarinet, the logical move was to work at Defra for 10 years. She then became a secondary languages teacher while completing a PhD on Russian multilingualism and was inspired to return to the environmental fold by all the young people desperate to make our planet inhabitable again. Jess has been setting up environmental networks of students from schools across the UK and will be developing them further as Head of Youth Networks at Global Action Plan.

Kit and Alistair enjoy some Sumatran dark forest coffee bags, chatting about the Giant’s Causeway, historic connotations and identity in accents and community, the troubles in Northern Ireland, Shared Education, being in a rock band, amongst other things!

Alistair is an unashamed optimist who, even after 3 decades in the classroom, has not become cynical and has no intention of doing so now. He loves geography as much as ever, loves teaching it, and loves thinking about the art and craft of pedagogy. If described in three letters (not three words), those letters must be GIS. He is an advocate of how we can use modern digital geographies to help explore the majesty of the world around us and the seriousness of the global challenges we face. He is deeply committed to peace and reconciliation work in NI through the Shared Ed programme. Cormac is the Climate Ambassadors Northwest Regional Hub Manager. He has had a pretty diverse range of jobs and voluntary roles – one might call it a ‘portfolio career’ – connected through the golden thread of ‘community’. Cormac tends to exist in the bridges between things – a sociable introvert, who likes to think he can talk to anyone and find connections between different people. Last year, with his partner and daughter, Cormac moved to the hills outside Manchester to a lovely town called New Mills with a great community spirit – There he is connected with various initiatives, mainly the community orchard.

Sticking with juice, they and chat about the influence of local authorities, reintroducing bison to Kent, baking, amongst other things!

Gemma is based in Kent, but works at the University of Reading. She has always loved wildlife and chose to study Zoology as an undergraduate and then went to work at a conservation charity called the Big Cat Sanctuary, initially as a zoo keeper and then lead on education and sustainability at the Sanctuary. This sparked Gemma interest in sustainability, and lead to me studying for an MSc in Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey. After completing my studies she worked as a Climate Change Engagement Officer for a local authority before moving to my current role.

The first 10 years of Emma’s career has mainly been in the post-16 and post-18 education sector. Before her current role she worked for a Uni Connect Partnership, Higher Horizons, before that she was an academic tutor at Keele University, and before that Emma was a Progress Coach and Futures Curriculum Lead at a local sixth form college. Alongside these roles, Emma has been conducting research for her doctorate in education since 2019.
