this deserves to be on the radio, tis darn beautiful.

We know next to nothing about this band, other than they're from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. You might even have guessed that from the distorted thumb pianos which are highly redolent of Kinshasa's most famous recent export, Konono No.1 - but Mbongwana Star (Mbongwana means "change", apparently) are a very different proposition. There's some very strange dubwise production, courtesy of Parisian and sometime Tony Allen collaborator Doctor L, some eerie postpunk-sounding guitar work, and an altogether unique vibe. They're coming to Europe in April and May and there'll be an album on World Circuit around then too. We will be paying close attention.

Mbongwana Star "Malukayi" - Boiler Room Debuts

Frenzied Nairobi fire for you here, courtesy of a team-up between 14-legged troupe Sarabi, and Auntie Flo collaborator / all-round good guy Esa. The track's development is engrossing, forged in the crucible of a collective dedicated to the advancement of East African cultural interests, through live festival jams and lightning-quick studio sessions. It's too long and detailed to tell here – you'll have to cop the physical release for the full story splayed across the inlay.
This radio-ready version of "Koko's Vibration", mixed and produced by Esa and Ambrose Akula Akwabi (a the man known as the 'East African Mr Fingers', fact fans), adds a subtle gloss to the rough takes floating about the web, but loses not an iota of passion. That means spirited yelps, polyrhythmic drumming, hooks flying in from all angles, and those wicked Onyeabor-esque keyboard runs. It arrives soon as part of the Highlife Series; they've gone from Cuba to Kenya, and soon to Uganda. Like we said: real good music made with real good intentions by real good guys.

Sarabi "Koko's Vibration" - Boiler Room Debuts

"Back living in Shibuya on the 9th floor I can see day turn to night and watch the city breathe" explains submerse in reference to Stay Home, his upcoming EP for Project: Mooncircle. 

Where his first EPs and debut album Slow Waves mingled with nostalgia and adjusting to Tokyo city life, this is a celebration of stability - the tale of the beatmaker finally being comfortable within his latest surroundings. Just like the view from his apartment, these tracks play out like towering glimpses across a nocturnal city panorama. 

Amidst the vocal snippets of Goapele (on "Thinking About You") and twinkling nightriders like "Bokeh" lies "Gloom". A number that's dark by title, yet pearly in its timbre. Shifting along like an early AM nightbus soundtrack, it tides together puffy footwork paddles, R&B wails and the glint of electric piano in an alluring, eventide bundle.

Stay Home comes out worldwide on limited vinyl and digital as well as a limited edition CD including a bonus track via flau records in Japan on the 26th of May, 2015.

Ahead of a second full length album coming in April of 2016, one of the jewels in the Hotflush crown is back with another standout new EP. Sepalcure’s "Fight For Us EP" is their sixth on Scuba’s label, and it features two tracks of the sort of inventive and singular sounds that have made the American duo a truly unique proposition in the underground.

Sepalcure is the coming together of two creative musical talents, Travis Stewart (aka Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (who also works as Braille), and between the pair and their vast musical backgrounds they bring a real emotional sensibility and melodic sensuality to their sounds. Built on a solid groove foundation that takes cues from juke’s trademark jittery bass, they knit in both organic wood block hits and more synthetic electronic synth textures that are compelling and refreshing, and make for some of the most forward thinking sounds in all of modern day dance. This new release proves that once more.

Opener ‘Fight For Us’ is a shimmering, sun kissed and trilling electronic affair with lazy chords drifting next to heartfelt female vocals. Down low, a tender and light weight drum patter is inviting as it tumbles along, sucking you into the most vulnerable of emotional spaces. It’s a real heart-stopper that speaks of the sort of lost loves that we have all encountered at some point in our lives.

On the flip, the title track ‘Music 4 All’ is a more driven and direct, dance floor-oriented cut. Swooning synths are draped over rubber kicks as a nebulous vocal muttering infuses the whole thing. Prickly precision and filtered pads all add to the inviting sense of groove and lift you up, up and away.

This is honest electronic music with real structure that tugs at the heart whilst inviting you to tap your feet at the same time. For that rare trick, Sepalcure are in a class of their own.
