Tales From A Bicycle Seat is a series of impromptu conversations with artists, community leaders, and everyday citizens from different countries across planet earth, with your host George Maurer, a jazz musician, composer, and bike adventurer from Minneapolis, MN.

This conversation is with Canadian artist and scholar Pam Hall who I met while I was bicycling across Newfoundland in the Summer of 2018.

Tales From A Bicycle Seat (EP 1): Pam Hall

Tom Cochrane has an eye for stories that are waiting to be told.

He’s made his impact on the arts in his native Newfoundland via digital “take-away sessions”; music videos that take performing artists away from the comfort of the concert hall, and instead stage their performances out in the middle of the natural landscapes of Newfoundland.

His artistic voice speaks with a sense of urgency, though, in his ongoing attempts to frame the fading stories, histories, and the collective “sense of place” of small, economically-challenged communities in Canada’s Atlantic Provinces.

I met Tom as I was bicycling across Newfoundland in 2018. We spoke at a coffee shop in Woody Point on Bonne Bay in Gros Morne National Park during an annual writers festival: a festival that’s helped to counteract economic and socio-cultural changes to the region since the collapse of the cod fisheries in the early 1990’s.

Tales From a Bicycle Seat (EP3): Tom Cochrane

This is my score for the closing credits for the 2008 indy film "The Nihilist", taking place at the Battle of the Somme in WWI France.

In the opening section, a vintage WWI-era Salvation Army portable field organ, with cello, quote "Vesper Hymn", before the chamber ensemble takes over for the remainder of the composition.

Film Synopsis:
The Battle of the Somme began in northern France on July 1st. 1916. By the end of the first day over 58,00 were injured or dead. It was the single bloodiest day in the history of war. Captain R. Sterling Grimm awakens on July 2nd expected to lead a charge on the enemy lines. Unwilling to re-face the horrors of war, Grimm charges into enemy territory and inevitable death. Two soldiers are forced to choose between saving their suicidal captain and saving their own lives.
