Rousseau was far more than just a renegade philosopher, but his treatises on society and education frequently eclipse his significant contributions to literature, music theory and composition. It is this holistic view of Rousseau that UCL aims to highlight and celebrate on the 300th anniversary of his birth. Listen to the podcast to find out more about the man, and his work.

Coppi, Bartali, Magni: these are some of the great names of Italian cycling, yet this sport has an interesting relationship with Italy, shaping its culture, politics and language since its dramatic rise in popularity in the early 20th century. To find out more about this unique relationship I went to speak to John Foot, Professor of Modern Italian, and author of 'Pedalare! Pedalare! A History of Italian Cycling'.

'Faith in Suburbia: a shared photographic' is a collaboration between senior citizens from six different faith communities in West Ealing and Hanwell, London. The project records their exploration of each others’ worship spaces through a photography project initiated by UCL geographer, Dr Claire Dwyer and award-winning photographer Liz Hingley.

Professor Iwan Morgan (UCL Institute of the Americas) reacts to Barack Obama’s victory in the US Election and explores the strength of the Democrat’s campaign. We also hear reactions from Beatrice Kelly, one of the Presidents of the UCLU American Society, who describes her experience of the election, which she watched from one of the Union’s bars.

Professor Steve Jones is a stalwart of our Lunch Hour Lecture programme, which has now been running for 70 years. Professor Jones spoke to us about the history of Lunch Hour Lectures at UCL and also gave us a sneak preview of his own lecture this term that’s about the art of snails, and snails in art.

I spoke to Dr Jason Dittmer from UCL Geography about nationalist superheros like Captain America, and how the narratives, metaphors and geopolitics have changed since its introduction 70 years ago.

Professor Edward Allington and Jo Volley (UCL Slade School of Fine Art) demonstrate the complexities of creating a plaster cast and discuss other ways the medium has been used. Allington and Volley have helped to curate part of Plastered, an exhibition at the UCL Art Museum about plaster and the casting process, highlighting the sculpture models of the neo-classical artist John Flaxman (1755-1826).
