He got a bad start, covers up his track marks
Long sleeves so they won’t believe he’s got a sad heart
They say it’s tragic when your friends become your enemies
I say it happens and now half these dudes is dead to me
It’s ecstasy when I pen a rhyme with such complexity
While staring jagged daggers at these monsters sitting next to me
In hot pursuit of opportunity
My persona’s calm enough to tranquilize communities
As soon as he revels in the fact, he’s a rebel in the back
Levels flat, but it’s something cardiac when he attacks
His imagery, making mental pictures enigmatic
As he drops a pack of visual syllables through the static
Rushing to the panic where the hate takes the love
Scared strong until his face up in the mud becomes a fistful of blood

All the while
He’d hold the smile
It was an old disguise for souls defiled
He craves the pavement, so now he hits the ground running
The truth is they never saw this shit coming
I was too young for a spiritual crisis
Still in suspense at the miracle life is
Lifeless with a story that he hated
The greater the fall, the more he’s captivated
There’s a price he has to pay for the innocent
Like cigarettes burning at both ends till the middle’s lit
A little bit of all his love is still loose
But the knots in the wire were the edge of the noose

But I push the kiss of death away
To forget that yesterday
I still felt like I was nothing at all
I got these melodies telling me to be
Laughing it off, stay laughing it off
And I’m so glad that I’m lost
It gives me purpose
And underneath the surface
He knows that he’s been cursed but the journey’s always worth it
He’s nocturnal in the dead of the night
Up with a journal and a pen just to right
In hindsight, maybe ending the fight with my life and the edge of a knife
Was the catastrophe meant to be the last of me, has to be
Lungs slowly filling to capacity in a sunshine-battered-shoreline fantasy
As the waves dig a grave for my memories
I’m hoping that the open sea can wash away what’s broken me
I spot my problems, but I’m blind to the solutions
My mind is so abusive, yet I find it so amusing

The first remix for 'Index' was done by Pat Mastelotto of King Crimson - Pat is the drummer on the original studio version and did a beautiful job, exactly what I wanted, but in his words…

"I saw a YouTube clip of one of your early shows and Marco was drumming up a storm and I thought damn that's what I wanted to do!  But as a session man on the original track it felt self indulgent for me to send you back a brilliant song with a 'drummer goes nuts' treatment when the song clearly stands on its own as chords and a great story it didn't need it.  But it was always in my head it could be Dave Grohl does Mike Giles over the bar line never stop drumming ... I had the multi tracks so said what the hell let the horses run and see what I can do….”
